Name and Purpose
- 1-2-3 Look is a low-energy circle game that builds group awareness and gets everyone laughing together.
- Players practise quick decision-making and reading the room without any skill or fitness barrier.
a.k.a.
- Look Up
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Any circle space, indoors or outdoors
Materials
- No materials required
- Optional: chairs or mats so players who prefer not to stand can join equally
Quick-Run Card
- Form a circle, heads bowed, eyes closed.
- Leader calls ‘1-2-3-Look!’ and everyone looks up at one person.
- Players cannot change who they are looking at mid-round.
- If two players lock eyes, both step back to the Second Circle for a quick re-entry challenge.
- Round ends when only two players remain or time is called.
Setup and Boundaries
- Form a clear circle with enough space between players that everyone can see each other
- Signal: leader’s voice is the only cue needed; raise one hand to pause
- Check that lighting is adequate for players to see each other clearly
- Ensure the circle floor is clear of trip hazards
How to Play
- Everyone stands or sits in a tight circle, heads down and eyes closed.
- The leader counts ‘1-2-3-Look!’ at a steady pace.
- On ‘Look,’ every player looks up and fixes their gaze on one specific person in the circle.
- Players cannot shift their gaze once they have looked up.
- If the person you are looking at is also looking directly at you, both of you step back one pace to the Second Circle.
- Second Circle: players do a fun movement (e.g., three jumping jacks, a silly walk) and then re-enter the main circle.
- The circle tightens with each round to keep the energy up.
- The round ends when two players remain, or when the leader calls time.

Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who prefer to sit may use a chair or mat; the game works equally well seated
- Players with visual sensitivities may keep their eyes partially open; the spirit of the game is the surprise, not surveillance
Stewardship Moment
- No materials means no cleanup needed; note this as a go-anywhere game
- Reflection: ‘What does this game tell us about how we pay attention to each other?’
Consent
- Pre-brief: ‘This game involves making eye contact with people in the circle. For those not comfortable with direct eye contact, looking at someone’s forehead or shoulder is another option and works just as well.’
- Mid-game check: After the first two rounds, pause and ask for a quick thumbs-up or thumbs-sideways check-in.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can step back from the circle at any time; call ‘In!’ to rejoin the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players bumping heads when bowing: ensure enough personal space in the circle before starting
- Confusion about eye-contact rules: demonstrate one round slowly before playing at speed
- Players feeling singled out when stepping back: frame the Second Circle as a fun bonus round, not a penalty
Warm-Up Suggestions
- ‘Name and Look’: go around the circle, each player says their name while making brief eye contact with the group
- ‘Mirror’: pairs face each other and mirror movements for 30 seconds to build comfort with eye contact
Debrief Questions
- What? ‘What happened in your head the moment you looked up and saw someone looking back at you?’
- So What? ‘What does it feel like to be noticed unexpectedly? What about noticing someone else?’
- Now What? ‘How might you be more intentional about making eye contact with people in your daily life?’
Cleanup and Reset
- No equipment to collect
- Rearrange any chairs used back to their original position
- Check the circle space is clear for the next activity
