Name and Purpose
- Ah So Ko is a fast-moving circle game that builds focus, quick reflexes, and group energy.
- Players practise listening, sequencing, and reacting quickly in a fun and low-stakes setting.
a.k.a.
- Pass the Rhythm, Salute Circle
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-25 players | 10-20 minutes | Circle space, seated, indoors or outdoors
Materials
- No materials required
- Optional: chairs or cushions so players who prefer not to sit on the ground can join from a raised seat
Quick-Run Card
- Sit in a circle and learn the three gestures: Ah (hand across forehead pointing sideways), So (hand across chin pointing sideways), Ko (both hands clap and point across the circle).
- Practice all three as a group before starting.
- Begin the sequence: Ah passes to a neighbour, So passes to the next, Ko jumps to anyone.
- Players who use the wrong gesture or hesitate too long move to the Sideline for a quick challenge, then re-enter.
- Play until time is called or the group sets a target number of passes.
Setup and Boundaries
- Sit in a circle close enough that everyone can hear and see clearly
- Signal: leader claps twice to pause and reset; one clap to restart
- Ensure seated players on chairs are spaced naturally into the circle
- Check for enough space between players so arm movements do not accidentally make contact
How to Play
- Everyone sits in a circle, players are close enough to see and hear each other clearly.
- Learn the three commands together as a group before starting:
- Ah: Say ‘Ah!’ and hold one hand flat across your forehead like a salute, fingers pointing to a neighbour on your left or right.
- So: Say ‘So!’ and hold one hand flat across your chin, fingers pointing to the neighbour on your left or right.
- Ko: Say ‘Ko!’ and clap both hands together, then point to anyone across the circle.
- The sequence must always go Ah, So, Ko in order. After Ko, the person pointed to starts again with Ah.
- Players react when pointed to by an Ah or So from their neighbour, or by a Ko from anywhere in the circle.
- A player who uses the wrong gesture, goes out of order, or takes too long to react moves to the Sideline.
- Sideline: the player does a quick mini-sequence (Ah-So-Ko on their own three times) with a sideline helper, then raises their hand to re-enter at the next natural pause.
- The group goal is to complete a set number of Ko jumps without a break, or to keep the sequence going for one full minute.
I-OPt Options
- Start
- A (Active): Jump in from round one
- S (Support): Help a neighbour learn the gestures during the practice round
- Q (Quiet): Learn by echoing each gesture quietly before the full game starts
- O (Observer): Watch the practice round, then join once the sequence makes sense
- Mid
- A (Active): Try to use Ko to jump the sequence to a far side of the circle
- S (Support): Be a Sideline helper for players doing their re-entry challenge
- Q (Quiet): Focus on reacting correctly to your neighbours rather than sending Ko passes
- O (Observer): Count successful Ko jumps and report the group’s progress
- Late
- A (Active): Push for speed on Ah and So passes
- S (Support): Count down to the group’s target aloud to build excitement
- Q (Quiet): Maintain your position; participate at your own pace
- O (Observer): Act as the referee for disputed calls
- End
- A (Active): Lead the final sprint to the group target
- S (Support): Start the group celebration when the target is hit
- Q (Quiet): Join the debrief from your seat
- O (Observer): Share one observation about how the group improved during the game
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players with limited arm mobility can use a head nod combined with a verbal call to indicate direction instead of the full hand gesture
- Players who are hard of hearing can watch for the gesture direction and respond to the visual cue rather than the spoken call
Stewardship Moment
- No materials means no cleanup and no waste
- Reflection: ‘This game came from a tradition of passing signals. What other ways do we send silent messages to each other?’
Consent
- Pre-brief: ‘This game uses hand gestures and pointing. For those not comfortable with pointing at others, you can use an open-hand wave in the direction of your target as another option.’
- Mid-game check: After the first full round, pause and ask: ‘How is everyone feeling? Ready to go faster or shall we keep this pace?’
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can move to the Sideline at any time to take a breather; the Sideline challenge is optional. Call ‘In!’ to rejoin at the next pause.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players pointing too aggressively: remind the group that pointing is a game signal, not a challenge; model a calm, clear gesture
- Arguments about whether a mistake was made: assign one leader as the final call on disputed plays
- Players feeling embarrassed about mistakes: celebrate the Sideline challenge as a fun bonus; consider going there yourself once early on
Warm-Up Suggestions
- ‘Echo Gesture’: leader does a random hand gesture; group echoes it simultaneously
- ‘Pass the Clap’: pass a single clap around the circle twice to build the rhythm of turn-taking
Debrief Questions
- What? ‘Which command gave you the most trouble and why?’
- So What? ‘What helped you stay focused when the sequence got fast?’
- Now What? ‘When in daily life do you need to read someone’s signal quickly and respond?’
Cleanup and Reset
- No equipment to collect
- Return any chairs to their original position
- Space is immediately ready for the next activity
