Name and Purpose
- Hot Potato Circle builds listening, timing, and calm under pressure.
- Players practise reading the group, quick decision-making, and graceful participation.
a.k.a.
- Countdown Circle, Pass and Pause
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Any flat seated space indoors or outdoors
Materials
- 1 soft foam ball or beanbag (no hard balls)
- Flat, even ground suitable for seated play
- Optional: cones to mark the circle edge
Quick-Run Card
- Players sit in a circle. One Counter sits in the centre, eyes closed.
- The group passes the ball around while the Counter silently counts to 20 (any speed).
- At 20, the Counter calls “Freeze!” Whoever holds the ball earns a Pause Point.
- Pause Point players stretch legs straight out. Future passes must step or go around carefully.
- The Counter role rotates after each round. Play until time is up.
Setup and Boundaries
- Seated circle with enough space between players to pass comfortably
- Signal: 1 short whistle or “Freeze!” = stop; 2 short whistles = gather
- Check ground for uneven surfaces before play; remove debris
- Staff stays near the edge of the circle to monitor stepping moments
How to Play
- One player volunteers to be the first Counter and sits in the centre, eyes closed.
- The group begins passing the ball around the circle in one direction.
- The Counter counts silently to any number up to 20 (can vary each round), then calls “Freeze!”
- The player holding the ball at “Freeze!” earns a Pause Point and stretches their legs straight out.
- Play continues. Players with Pause Points stay seated and in the game; future passers step or carefully reach over legs.
- When stepping over legs, pause the pass briefly so everyone can be safe.
- After 3-5 rounds, the Counter role passes clockwise. The game ends when time is up or everyone has been Counter.
- No one is removed from the game. Pause Points are a fun obstacle, not a penalty.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Pass the ball, dodge the freeze, be the Counter in the centre
- S (Support): Help steady a neighbour before someone steps over; call out encouragement
- Q (Quiet): Pass slowly and deliberately; focus on the rhythm of the group
- O (Observer): Watch from just outside the circle, count how many rounds before everyone has a Pause Point
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who cannot sit on the ground may use a low chair at the circle edge; ball passes along the seated line
- Players who prefer not to be in the centre can pass the Counter role without going in; they call “Freeze!” from their seat
Stewardship Moment
- Use a reusable foam ball or beanbag. After play, wipe and store for next use.
- Reflection: “Did you ever decide to pass faster or slower based on what you noticed around you? That is a kind of awareness you can use everywhere.”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “In this game one person sits in the middle and counts. For those not comfortable sitting in the centre, you can count from your seat in the circle instead, and that works just as well.”
- Mid-game check: After 5 minutes, pause. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. How is everyone doing?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Raise a hand to step back from the circle at any time. Say “In!” to rejoin at any open spot.
Risks and Mitigation
- Tripping over outstretched legs: remind passers to pause briefly and step carefully; staff monitors this moment each round
- Rushing to pass the ball: remind players there is no penalty for holding the ball; calm passing is the goal
- Counter feeling put on the spot: normalise the role as a cool challenge; no one guesses or judges the Counter
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Eye Count”: pass eye contact around the circle before adding the ball
- “Rhythm Pass”: clap before each pass to build a steady beat
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was it like to not know when ‘Freeze!’ was coming?”
- So What? “How did you decide how fast to pass? What helped you stay calm?”
- Now What? “When else do you have to stay ready without knowing exactly when something will happen?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect the ball or beanbag and return to equipment storage
- 30-second space check for any items left on the ground
- Reset any cones used
