Name and Purpose
- Motion Detective builds observation, sneaky coordination, and group awareness.
- Players practise following subtle cues and reading the group without giving anything away.
a.k.a.
- Who’s Leading? Mirror Circle
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 6-25 players | 10-15 minutes | Any flat seated space indoors or outdoors
Materials
- No materials required
- Flat seated area (chairs or floor)
Quick-Run Card
- One player volunteers to be the Guesser and steps just outside the circle to wait.
- The group quietly picks the Leader. The Leader starts any motion (clap, pat, snap, wave, etc.).
- Everyone copies the Leader’s motion. The Guesser is called back and stands in the centre.
- The Leader switches motions smoothly. Everyone follows without looking directly at the Leader.
- The Guesser has 3 tries to name the Leader. Roles rotate after each round.
Setup and Boundaries
- Seated circle; close enough for everyone to see the Leader’s motions clearly
- Signal: leader raises hand = pause; clap twice = new round begins
- Guesser waits just outside earshot; no one reveals the Leader’s name during the round
- Staff joins the circle as a player to model the sneaky-follow behaviour
How to Play
- One player volunteers to be the Guesser. They step about 5 metres away from the circle with their back turned or just out of sight.
- The group (and staff, if needed) quietly selects the Leader with a silent point or thumbs-up.
- The Leader begins a simple motion: patting knees, clapping, snapping, waving, nodding, etc.
- Everyone in the circle copies the Leader’s motion. The goal is to follow transitions so smoothly that the Guesser cannot identify who is leading.
- The Guesser is called back and stands in the centre of the circle.
- The Leader switches motions every 10-15 seconds. Everyone follows as subtly as possible.
- The Guesser has 3 guesses. After each guess, the group reacts (right: cheer; wrong: keep playing).
- After 3 guesses or a correct identification, reveal the Leader. Celebrate both roles.
- The identified Leader (or a new volunteer) becomes the next Guesser. Rotate.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Be the Guesser or the Leader; mirror motions with full commitment; try to trick the Guesser with very subtle switches
- S (Support): Help transitions feel smooth by following the Leader a half-beat early; encourage the Guesser with a neutral expression
- Q (Quiet): Mirror motions quietly; enjoy the sneaky coordination without drawing attention
- O (Observer): Watch from outside the circle; try to spot the Leader yourself; compare your read to the Guesser’s guesses
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who use assistive devices or have limited mobility can use head movements, facial expressions, or finger motions as their Leading action
- Players who prefer not to be the Guesser in the centre can pass; the Guesser role only goes to willing volunteers
- For hearing-limited players, use visual signals (raised hand) as the start/stop cue instead of verbal calls
Stewardship Moment
- No materials and no waste. The whole game runs on attention and connection.
- Reflection: “You stayed tuned in to one person without making it obvious. When is that kind of quiet attentiveness useful in real life?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “One person stands in the middle and tries to figure out who is leading the group’s movements. For those not comfortable in the centre, the Guesser role only goes to people who volunteer. You can be a motion-follower the whole time.”
- Mid-game check: After 2-3 rounds, pause. “Enjoying this? Any adjustments to make it better?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Stay in the circle as a follower at any time. Raise a hand to volunteer for Guesser or Leader when ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- Guesser feeling embarrassed after 3 wrong guesses: frame the challenge as designed to be hard; “Three wrong guesses means the group did an amazing job hiding the Leader!”
- Group making the Leader too obvious: coach players to look around naturally rather than sneaking glances at the Leader
- Guesser not called back in a timely way: staff manages timing; Guesser waits no more than 30 seconds
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Mirror Pairs”: partners mirror each other’s slow movements for 60 seconds to prime the follow-reflex
- “Group Clap”: the whole circle syncs a single clap rhythm without a designated leader, then add a leader secretly
Debrief Questions
- What? “What clues did you use to try to find the Leader? What gave people away?”
- So What? “What does it take to follow someone’s lead without drawing attention to them?”
- Now What? “When do you quietly follow someone’s lead in daily life . and what makes that kind of trust work?”
Cleanup and Reset
- No cleanup required
- Optional: note the smoothest Leader switch for a fun memory
