Name and Purpose
- Tower Ball builds agility, reaction time, and spatial awareness.
- Players practise quick decisions, coordination, and friendly competition in a tight-knit circle.
a.k.a.
- Goalie Circle, Leg-Gate Ball
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 7-25 players | 10-20 minutes | Flat surface indoors or outdoors, enough room for a close-knit standing circle
Materials
- 1 soft foam ball or rubber playground ball
- Flat, even surface (gym floor, grass, or pavement)
- Optional: small cones to mark the outer edge of the circle
Quick-Run Card
- Players stand in a circle, feet touching their neighbours, legs spread into a V-gate.
- Hands form a two-fisted paddle to hit and block the ball.
- Try to hit the ball through another player’s V-gate or over the centre between two players.
- Ball through your gate: lose one hand (one fist behind back). Second time: turn to face out. Third time: step to the Second Circle.
- Second Circle players do a keep-away juggle at the side. Re-enter after 60 seconds.
Setup and Boundaries
- Form a tight circle so feet touch; check the surface for wet spots or debris before play
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause; 2 whistles = stop and gather
- No running or lunging; all hits must come from the circle edge
- Staff stands just outside the circle to watch footing safety
How to Play
- Players stand in a close circle, feet spread so each foot touches the foot of the person beside them, forming V-shaped leg gates.
- Everyone makes two fists pressed together to form a paddle (no open hands).
- The leader rolls the ball into the centre to start play.
- Players use their paddle to hit the ball, trying to send it through another player’s leg-gate or between two players across the centre.
- If the ball goes through your V-gate, you lose one hand: tuck one fist behind your back.
- Second offence: turn to face the outside of the circle and play with your back to the centre.
- Third offence: step to the Second Circle at the side. Do a foot-juggle or keep-away toss with a partner. Re-enter after 60 seconds.
- Optional name-game variation: instead of elimination points, hit the ball and call out the name of the person you are aiming toward. Great for new groups.
- Round ends when time is up or one player remains in full form.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Hit and block with full intensity; aim for other gates; try to stay in full two-hand form
- S (Support): Encourage neighbours; help count re-entry time for Second Circle players
- Q (Quiet): Play at steady effort; focus on blocking rather than attacking
- O (Observer): Watch from outside the circle; track who has lost a hand; help count re-entries
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players with limited leg mobility may use a chair at the circle edge; the gap between chair legs serves as their gate
- Players with one hand can play one-paddle from the start; no stage penalties are applied to them
- Name-game variation works well for mixed-age groups or early sessions where competitiveness should be low
Stewardship Moment
- Use a ball from the existing equipment kit. No disposables needed.
- Reflection: “This circle only works when everyone holds their position and plays their part. What does that remind you of in your cabin or team?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves standing close together with feet touching. For those not comfortable with close contact, you can stand just outside the circle and act as a boundary monitor or play in the name-game variation where there are no penalty stages.”
- Mid-game check: After 5 minutes, pause. “Check in with yourself . still feeling good? Thumbs up, sideways, or down.”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Raise a hand to step out at any time. Step back to any open space to rejoin.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players lunging or diving for the ball: remind everyone that feet stay planted; model the upright posture before play
- Ball hit too hard causing a sting: use a soft foam ball; no overhand strikes
- Players feeling singled out when facing backwards: reframe it as a fun challenge position, not a shame stage; staff model positive energy
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Circle Squeeze”: standing in the circle, pass a gentle shoulder-squeeze around the loop
- “Foot Shuffle”: practise the V-gate stance and opening/closing gates with a slow roll before play starts
Debrief Questions
- What? “What did you notice about how you defended your gate versus how you attacked others’?”
- So What? “How did losing a hand change your approach to the game?”
- Now What? “Where else do you have to adapt your strategy when you have fewer resources available?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect the ball and return to storage
- Quick surface scan for hazards
- Reset any cones used
