a.k.a.
- Secret Signal, Wink and Fall
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-25 players | 10-20 minutes | Seated circle, indoors or outdoors
Materials
- No materials required
- Optional: chairs or cushions for seating
Quick-Run Card
- Players sit in a circle. One player (the Detective) steps outside or covers their eyes.
- Group quietly agrees on one Winker.
- Detective returns to the centre.
- The Winker winks at players secretly. Winked players do a slow dramatic ‘faint.’
- Detective gets 3 guesses to name the Winker. Rotate roles and play again.
Setup and Boundaries
- Seated circle on chairs, cushions, or the ground. Enough space between players to fall safely to the side.
- Signal: 1 short whistle or leader clap = pause the round.
- No physical contact required between players.
How to Play
- Players sit in a circle. One player (the Detective) steps outside the space or covers their eyes while the group chooses a Winker.
- The Detective returns and stands or sits in the centre.
- The Winker secretly winks at players one at a time. There is no set timing; the Winker chooses their moment.
- A player who receives a wink does a slow, dramatic ‘faint’ (leaning or gently sliding to the side). Staff model a safe, controlled faint before play begins.
- The Detective watches the group and gets 3 guesses to name the Winker. The round ends after the guesses or when the Detective correctly names the Winker.
- Rotate roles and play again.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Serve as the Detective or Winker.
- S (Support): Be an expressive fainter; help keep the suspense alive for the Detective.
- Q (Quiet): Sit calmly, faint subtly, focus on watching the Winker.
- O (Observer): Watch from just outside the circle and rotate in when ready.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players not comfortable with dramatic physical falls can use a simple hand-over-heart gesture instead of fainting.
- Players with vision differences can serve as the Winker or in another active role that does not require seeing across the circle.
Stewardship Moment
- No materials needed or used up.
- Reflection: ‘What does it take to stay focused when you are trying not to give something away?’
Consent
- Pre-brief: ‘In this game, one player will be secretly signalling to others. When you receive the signal, you do a gentle dramatic faint. For those not comfortable with falling or floor movement, a hand-over-heart gesture is another option.’
- Mid-game check: After the first round, check in. ‘For those not comfortable with any element, an observer or helper role is another option. Anyone want to swap?’
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can pass their turn or swap roles between rounds. No explanation needed.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players falling awkwardly during the faint: staff model a safe slow-lean faint before play. Remind players to move slowly and stay in control.
- Players feeling put on the spot when the Detective guesses them: frame guesses as fun and light. Celebrate even wrong guesses.
- Detective role feeling stressful: limit guesses to 3 and celebrate the round regardless of outcome.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- ‘Mirror’: pairs face each other and mirror movements slowly for 30 seconds.
- ‘Freeze Frame’: everyone mingles, leader calls ‘freeze’ and everyone stops in place.
Debrief Questions
- What? ‘What clues did you use to try and spot the Winker?’
- So What? ‘What does it feel like to hold a secret in a group? What about being the one searching?’
- Now What? ‘How does paying attention to small details help you in everyday situations?’
Cleanup and Reset
- No materials to collect.
- Return any chairs or cushions to their place.
