Name and Purpose
- Kumcha is a rhythm and coordination circle game that builds focus, timing, and group energy.
- Everyone moves together the whole time, which means every player is always part of the action.
a.k.a.
- Bunny Bunny, Kumcha Circle
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Standing circle, indoors or outdoors
Materials
- No materials required
Quick-Run Card
- Teach the Kumcha base motion: ‘kum’ = arms down, knees bend. ‘Cha’ = arms up, legs straight.
- Get the whole group chanting Kumcha together at a slow steady pace.
- The starter calls ‘bunny bunny, bunny bunny,’ pointing to themselves first then passing to another player.
- The receiver repeats ‘bunny bunny, bunny bunny’ and passes it on. Players on each side say ‘tokey tokey’ with jazz hands.
- Speed up each round. Players who lose the beat reset and jump back in.
Setup and Boundaries
- Stand in a circle with enough room between players to extend arms out to the sides.
- Signal: leader raising both hands = slow the pace back to the beginning speed.
- No trip hazards in the standing space.
How to Play
- The leader teaches the base Kumcha motion: on ‘kum,’ flap arms down like wings and bend knees; on ‘cha,’ flap arms up and straighten legs. Repeat together until the group has a steady rhythm.
- Everyone chants ‘Kumcha, Kumcha’ continuously as the base rhythm. The pace starts slow.
- When ready, the starter calls ‘bunny bunny, bunny bunny.’ On the first pair, they use one hand (shaped like a duck bill, opening and closing) pointing to themselves. On the second pair, they point that hand at someone else across the circle.
- The person receiving the bunny now takes over: ‘bunny bunny’ to themselves, then ‘bunny bunny’ passing to another player.
- The two players directly to the left and right of the bunny-holder say ‘tokey tokey, tokey tokey’ at the same timing, facing the bunny-holder with jazz hands. One hand high, one hand low. Switch positions on the second pair.
- Everyone not holding the bunny or doing tokey keeps chanting ‘Kumcha.’ Everyone bends and straightens their legs throughout.
- Increase the pace each round. Players who lose the rhythm reset with a smile and jump back in immediately.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Lead the bunny pass, move energetically with full commitment to the motions.
- S (Support): Focus on being a reliable tokey player for whoever has the bunny near you.
- Q (Quiet): Keep the Kumcha chant soft and steady, focus on the leg rhythm.
- O (Observer): Watch from just outside the circle and step in when ready.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players with limited arm mobility can use a head nod or eye-contact gesture instead of the duck-hand motion to pass the bunny.
- Players who are seated can modify the knee-bend motion to a forward-and-back torso rock at the same rhythm.
Stewardship Moment
- No materials needed or used up.
- Reflection: ‘What happens to the group when one person slows down or speeds up?’
Consent
- Pre-brief: ‘This game involves moving your whole body in rhythm. For those not comfortable with the full motion, any version of the movement that feels right for you works perfectly.’
- Mid-game check: After the first round, pause. ‘How did that feel? Ready to go faster? Thumbs up or sideways.’
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can step back and watch. Jump back in to the Kumcha chant any time.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players feeling embarrassed when they lose the beat: remind the group that losing the beat is part of the fun and that resetting is always the move.
- Fast pace causing physical fatigue: bring the pace back down after each round if needed. This game should feel playful, not exhausting.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- ‘Rhythm Echo’: leader claps and stomps a 4-beat pattern, group echoes. Repeat 3 times.
- ‘Pat and Clap’: alternate patting thighs and clapping hands in a steady beat to build rhythm comfort.
Debrief Questions
- What? ‘What was the hardest part to keep track of?’
- So What? ‘How did the group change when the pace got faster?’
- Now What? ‘When do you need to keep doing your part even when things around you speed up?’
Cleanup and Reset
- No materials to collect.
- No space reset needed.
