- Sally in the Circle, Walking Song

Materials
- No materials required
Quick-Run Card
- Everyone stands in a circle. One player volunteers to walk around the inside.
- The group sings the song as the walker moves.
- The walker stops in front of someone and does a simple dance move.
- The group sings the response. That person mirrors the move back.
- The two swap. The new player walks the circle and the game continues.
Setup and Boundaries
- Wide enough circle so the walker has clear space inside.
- Signal: leader raising both hands = pause the song.
- No trip hazards in the centre of the circle.
How to Play
- Everyone stands in a wide circle. One player volunteers to walk slowly around the inside.
- The group sings together: ‘Little Sally Walker, walking down the street. She didn’t know what to do, so she stopped in front of me.’
- As the song ends, the walker stops in front of one person and does a simple dance move of their choosing. Any move works.
- The group sings: ‘Hey, do that thing, do that thing and switch!’ The person in the circle mirrors the dance move back to the walker. The group repeats: ‘Hey, do that thing, do that thing and switch!’
- The two players swap places. The new player is now the walker and the game continues from step 2.
- Continue until everyone who wants a turn has had one.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Be the walker, create an energetic dance move, sing out loud.
- S (Support): Sing enthusiastically to support the walker. Cheer for every dance move.
- Q (Quiet): Sing softly or mouth the words, do a small gentle move when mirroring.
- O (Observer): Stand in the circle and watch, step in when ready.
Inclusion Adaptations
- The dance move can be any body movement, including a finger wiggle, a nod, or a shoulder shrug. All moves are celebrated equally.
- Players who use mobility aids can walk or roll the inside of the circle at any pace. The move they choose can be seated or standing.
Stewardship Moment
- No materials needed or used up.
- Reflection: ‘What did you notice about how the group responded to everyone’s different move?’
Consent
- Pre-brief: ‘In this game, each player gets a moment to share a movement while the group cheers. For those not comfortable being in the centre, staying in the circle and singing is another great option. There is no wrong dance move.’
- Mid-game check: After a few rounds, pause. ‘How is everyone feeling? Is the energy good?’
- Opt-out/re-entry: The walker can pass their turn back to the group by pointing to a volunteer instead of stopping in front of someone. Rejoin by raising a hand.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players feeling embarrassed about their dance move: remind the group before play that every move gets celebrated. Staff go first and model a silly low-key move to set the tone.
- Walker feeling pressure to choose someone quickly: there is no time pressure. The walker can take their time.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- ‘Copycat’: stand in a circle and one player does a simple move. Everyone copies. Rotate quickly.
- ‘Freeze Dance’: play 10 seconds of music and freeze. Loosens up movement comfort.
Debrief Questions
- What? ‘What dance moves did you see that surprised you or made you smile?’
- So What? ‘What does it feel like to have a group celebrate something you did?’
- Now What? ‘How can you make people in your group feel seen and celebrated in everyday moments?’
Cleanup and Reset
- No materials to collect.
- No space reset needed.
