Name and Purpose
- Ninja Circle is a turn-based movement game that builds focus, reaction time, and friendly competition.
- Players practise staying still, reading others, and making quick decisions in a calm, structured format.
a.k.a.
- Ninja, Freeze Ninja
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-25 players | 10-20 minutes | Any flat open space; players need about one arm’s length of space each
Materials
- No materials required
- Optional: soft background music for the warm-up phase
Quick-Run Card
- Form a tight circle; rub hands together until the leader calls “Hiiiiya!”
- Everyone jumps back and freezes in a ninja pose.
- Clockwise order: each player makes one move to tag a neighbour’s hand.
- The target player may make one move to dodge.
- When both hands are tagged, the player moves to the Second Circle and counts successful dodges.
Setup and Boundaries
- Clear a flat, even circle with no obstacles
- Signal: two claps = pause all action; three claps = come together
- Check the floor for wet patches or debris before play
How to Play
- Players stand shoulder to shoulder in a circle.
- Everyone rubs hands together while the leader builds energy.
- On “Hiiiiya!” all players jump back simultaneously and freeze in a ninja pose.
- Starting with the leader and going clockwise, each player takes one fluid move to try to tag any hand belonging to the player directly to their left or right.
- The player being tagged may use one move to pull their hand away. After that, they must freeze again.
- If a hand is tagged, it goes behind the back and is out of play for the rest of the round.
- When both of a player’s hands are tagged, they step back and join the Second Circle: they silently count the number of successful dodges they see and track their own best-dodge streaks.
- Last player with at least one active hand wins the round.
- Start a new round immediately so Second Circle players re-enter.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Compete in the main circle, making tags and dodges
- S (Support): Call out encouraging words from the Second Circle; help newer players understand the turn order
- Q (Quiet): Join the circle but focus only on dodging, not tagging
- O (Observer): Watch from outside, count rounds, signal the leader when someone may have moved out of turn
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who prefer minimal physical contact may use a pool noodle or wristband tap instead of hand contact
- Seated players can participate with hands flat on a table or lap; the same one-move rule applies
Stewardship Moment
- No materials to clean up; take 30 seconds at the end to check the play space for anything that was displaced
- Reflection: “How did being still help you in this game? Where else does stillness help?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves light hand contact. For those not comfortable with touching others’ hands, a wristband or wrist tap is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After the first round, ask players to give a thumbs up, sideways, or down. Adjust energy level if needed.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players in the Second Circle may re-enter at the start of any new round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players lunging too far or losing balance: remind everyone that one calm, controlled move is the rule; wild lunges are not in the spirit of the game
- Disagreements about whether a tag landed: staff makes the final call calmly; no arguments in the circle
- Jumping back and colliding: ensure enough space before the opening “Hiiiiya!”
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Slow-Motion Walk”: players walk across the space in slow motion, practising controlled movement
- “Mirror Freeze”: pairs mirror each other and freeze on a signal, building the stillness skill used in Ninja
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was the hardest part: tagging, dodging, or staying still?”
- So What? “What helped you decide when to move and when to hold back?”
- Now What? “Where in your day does that kind of calm focus come in handy?”
Cleanup and Reset
- No materials to collect
- Check play space for any tripping hazards
- Reset circle position for the next group
