Name and Purpose
- Oreo Hand Slap is a rhythm and reaction game played in a circle with a fun chant.
- Players practise timing, focus, and quick reflexes in a relaxed, social setting.
a.k.a.
- Hand Stack Slap, Slap Circle
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 6-20 players | 10-15 minutes | Seated or standing circle; any flat space
Materials
- No materials required
- Optional: printed or displayed lyrics for the chant
Quick-Run Card
- Form a circle; each player puts one hand over the next player’s hand and one hand under the previous player’s hand.
- Everyone learns the Oreo chant together before play begins.
- Sing the chant and slap each hand in sequence around the circle on each beat.
- On the final beat, the player slapped must try to slap the next hand before it escapes.
- Hit lands: that hand is out. Miss: the slapper’s hand is out. Both players stay in; hand goes behind back. Join Second Circle when both hands are out.
Setup and Boundaries
- Players sit or stand close enough to touch hands comfortably
- Signal: one raised hand from staff = pause; two raised hands = stop and reset
- Check that the space is free of sharp objects at hand level
How to Play
- Players form a circle and alternate hands: right hand on top of the left hand of the person to the right; left hand under the right hand of the person to the left.
- Staff teaches the Oreo chant slowly before play starts: “Oreo / Do you know how to eat an Oreo / Take off the top and eat it inside-out / Creamylicious, Chocolate sensation / 1-2-3-4 Or-e-O!”
- During the chant, players slap each hand around the circle gently on each beat, moving clockwise.
- On the final syllable (“Or-e-O!”), the player whose hand is slapped last must immediately try to slap the next hand in the circle before that player pulls away.
- If the slap lands: the player whose hand was slapped loses that hand and places it behind their back.
- If the slap misses: the slapper loses that hand.
- When both of a player’s hands are out, they step back to the Second Circle: they clap the beat from the outside to keep the rhythm going for everyone still in.
- Begin a new round once three or fewer players remain so Second Circle players re-enter.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Participate fully in the circle, slapping and dodging
- S (Support): Lead the chant from outside the circle; keep the beat for Second Circle players
- Q (Quiet): Join the circle but use a gentle tap instead of a full slap
- O (Observer): Watch from outside; help newer players learn the chant before joining
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players with limited hand mobility may tap the top of the next player’s hand with one finger instead of a full slap
- The chant can be spoken rhythmically instead of sung for players who prefer not to sing
Stewardship Moment
- No materials to clean up
- Reflection: “This game runs entirely on people power. What does that tell us about what we can do without stuff?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves touching hands. For those not comfortable with hand contact, tapping wrists or using a short wand to tap is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After one practice round, pause and check in. “Feeling good? Thumbs up, sideways, or down.”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players may step back at any time. They re-enter at the start of the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Hard slaps causing discomfort: establish a “gentle tap” norm at the start; staff models the right force level
- Chant unfamiliar to some players: teach the full chant before any slapping begins
- Crowding or bumping in the circle: ensure each player has shoulder-width of space
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Pat and Clap”: pairs pat knees and clap in a simple rhythm together to build the beat awareness needed
- Clap the Oreo chant rhythm once through, hands-free, before adding the circle game
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was harder: keeping the rhythm or the quick reaction at the end?”
- So What? “What helped you stay focused while also having fun?”
- Now What? “Where else in your day do you need that mix of focus and fun?”
Cleanup and Reset
- No materials to collect
- Check the circle area for any tripping hazards
- Reset seating for the next activity
