a.k.a.
- The Okay Game, Secret Word Circle
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 6-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Any seated circle, indoors or outdoors
Materials
- 1 pen or marker
Quick-Run Card
- Gather the group in a circle with the leader holding a pen.
- Leader says the full phrase (with ‘okay’) and passes the pen with a pointing gesture.
- Each person tries the phrase and gets an honest yes or no from the leader.
- Players who figure out the secret stay quiet so others can discover it too.
- Round ends when everyone is in on the secret. Celebrate together.
Setup and Boundaries
- A seated or standing circle works equally well.
- Signal: leader raising the pen = it is someone’s turn.
- No physical movement needed; low-energy and accessible.
How to Play
- The leader holds a pen and says: ‘Okay, I can play the pen game. Can you play the pen game?’
- The leader points at players one at a time in a sweeping gesture.
- The player pointed to last tries to repeat the phrase.
- The leader says ‘Yes, you can’ if the player included ‘okay’ anywhere in their phrase, or ‘No, you can’t’ if they left it out.
- Players who figure out the secret nod subtly and stay quiet, letting others discover.
- Continue until everyone has cracked the code.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Take enthusiastic turns, try different guesses, help keep energy up.
- S (Support): Encourage others with a smile or thumbs-up when they try.
- Q (Quiet): Take a low-key turn, watch and listen carefully for clues.
- O (Observer): Watch from just outside the circle and jump in when ready.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players with speech differences can write or gesture their phrase on paper.
- A visual cue card showing the phrase can help players who need processing time.
Stewardship Moment
- Only one pen is needed. No materials used up or thrown away.
- Reflection: ‘What do we usually overlook because we are focused on the obvious?’
Consent
- Pre-brief: ‘This game has a hidden secret. You will figure it out at your own pace. No pressure to guess fast. For those not comfortable speaking out loud, writing your answer or whispering to the leader is another option.’
- Mid-game check: After a few rounds, pause and smile. ‘Everyone still having fun? Take your time.’
- Opt-out/re-entry: Anyone can pass their turn by shaking their head. Rejoin any time by nodding at the leader.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players who feel embarrassed by repeated wrong answers: remind the group that discovering this puzzle takes time and every guess is a good one.
- Players who already know the game spoiling it: brief them before the session to stay quiet and enjoy watching others discover it.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- ‘Echo Clap’: leader claps a rhythm, group echoes it exactly.
- ‘One Word Story’: group builds a story one word at a time around the circle.
Debrief Questions
- What? ‘What did you notice about what the leader was doing or saying each time?’
- So What? ‘Why is it hard to spot something simple when you are focused on something else?’
- Now What? ‘When in real life might slowing down and listening more carefully help you?’
Cleanup and Reset
- Return pen to kit.
- No physical space to reset.
