Name and Purpose
- Condiment Circle Run gets everyone moving and laughing together.
- Players practise quick decision-making, spatial awareness, and light-hearted competition.
a.k.a.
- Fruit Bowl Run, Musical Spots
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-40 players | 10-20 minutes | Open gym or field with a clear circle marked by cones or chairs
Materials
- Cones or chairs to mark spots (one per player, minus one)
- Optional: coloured arm bands or name tags to track groups
Quick-Run Card
- Mark spots in a circle. One fewer spot than players.
- Assign each player a condiment: Ketchup, Mustard, or Relish.
- Leader stands in the centre and calls a condiment name.
- Those players leave their spots and run around the outside of the circle.
- Everyone races to find an empty spot. The player without a spot takes the centre and calls next.
Setup and Boundaries
- Arrange spots in a clear circle with at least 1m between each
- Signal: one short whistle to pause, two whistles to stop and gather
- Check the floor or ground for hazards before play begins
- Remind players to run around the outside of the circle, not through the middle
How to Play
- Players stand at or sit on their spots. One player starts in the centre.
- The centre player calls a condiment name (or calls “Tip the Condiment Bowl” to send everyone running).
- All named players leave their spots and run around the circle in the same direction.
- Everyone, including the centre player, tries to claim an empty spot.
- The player left without a spot moves to the centre. They join the Sauce Crew: a small group in the middle who cheer, count running laps, or hold the next call card.
- Sauce Crew players re-enter the circle when anyone calls “Tip the Condiment Bowl” and a wave of empty spots opens up.
- Play for a set number of rounds or until the group is ready to stop.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Run for a new spot on every call
- S (Support): Sauce Crew role in the centre: cheer runners, count laps, call the next condiment
- Q (Quiet): Walk to a new spot instead of running; still fully in the game
- O (Observer): Manage the music or signal, announce the condiment name for the leader
Inclusion Adaptations
- Walking variation: any player can choose to walk rather than run at any time, with no penalty or comment
- Seat-based play: spots can be chairs; players tap the chair back rather than sitting to keep transitions fast for players using mobility aids
Stewardship Moment
- At the end of play, ask players to stack cones or return chairs together as a team
- Prompt: “How did it feel to share the space? Did anyone help someone else find a spot?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves moving quickly to find a spot. For those not comfortable with running, walking to a spot is a completely fine option. You are always in the game.”
- Mid-game check: after a few rounds, pause and give a thumbs-up, sideways, or down check-in
- Opt-out and re-entry: any player can step back and join the Sauce Crew at any time; raise a hand to signal; re-enter on the next “Tip the Bowl” call
Risks and Mitigation
- Collisions when players rush for the same spot: remind players to approach spots from the outside of the circle, not by cutting across
- Crowded centre if too many players accumulate: bring Sauce Crew back into play more frequently with “Tip the Bowl” calls
- Slippery floors: check surface before play; walking variation reduces slip risk
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Condiment Handshake”: players mingle and greet three others by name and condiment
- “Slow Motion Run”: everyone practises moving to a spot in slow motion before full speed
Debrief Questions
- What? “What happened when someone called your condiment? What did you do first?”
- So What? “How did it feel when you found a spot? How did it feel when you didn’t?”
- Now What? “Where else in your day do you make quick decisions under a little pressure?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect cones or return chairs to their original places
- 60-second sweep: players each grab one item to put away
