Name and Purpose
- Stella Ella Ola is a rhythmic circle game that builds timing, focus, and a shared sense of rhythm.
- Players practise listening, anticipation, and cooperative play through song and movement.
a.k.a.
- Slap Circle, Pass the Clap
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 6-20 players | 10-20 minutes | Any circle-friendly space, seated on the ground or in chairs
Materials
- No materials required
Quick-Run Card
- Sit in a circle. Each player’s right hand rests on top of the left neighbour’s hand; left hand is under the right neighbour’s.
- Starting player slaps the hand to their left. The slap travels around the circle.
- Sing the Stella Ella Ola chant together as the slap travels.
- Whichever hand is slapped on the word “FOUR” moves to the Waiting Arc beside the circle.
- Waiting Arc players re-enter after one full round of the song is complete.
Setup and Boundaries
- Sit in a tight circle so hands are naturally close together
- Signal: leader raises both hands to pause; players freeze
- Check that the floor or ground is comfortable for seated play; offer chairs for players who need them
How to Play
- Players sit in a circle. Each player places their right hand on top of the left neighbour’s palm. Their left hand is placed under the right neighbour’s palm.
- The starting player slaps the top of the hand to their left with their free right hand.
- That player passes the slap to the next person, and so on around the circle.
- The group sings the chant together as the slap travels: “Stella ella ola, slap slap slap. Yes, chica chica, chica chica slapjack. Go. Slow. Go slow go slow. One two three FOUR.”
- The hand that is slapped on the word “FOUR” moves out of the circle to the Waiting Arc.
- Players in the Waiting Arc stay engaged: they clap the rhythm, sing the chant, and track the count for the group.
- After one full round of the song, Waiting Arc players slide their hand back into the circle at any open gap.
- The game continues for a set number of rounds or until the group is ready for a new activity.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Play in the full circle, both hands in
- S (Support): Waiting Arc role: keep the rhythm, lead the singing, count aloud
- Q (Quiet): Place one hand in the circle and keep the other in your lap; still fully in the game
- O (Observer): Sit just outside the circle, clap the beat, and choose when to join
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players with limited hand mobility can tap a neighbour’s wrist or forearm instead of slapping the hand
- Seated version on chairs works equally well for players who cannot sit on the ground
Stewardship Moment
- No materials to clean up
- Reflection: “We made music together with just our hands and voices. What else can we create with only what we already have?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves light hand contact. For those not comfortable with hand touching, tapping a wrist or forearm is another option, and works exactly the same way.”
- Mid-game check: after a few rounds, pause and ask for a thumbs check; anyone can shift to Waiting Arc support
- Opt-out and re-entry: slide your hand out of the circle at any point; re-enter after one full round of the song
Risks and Mitigation
- Slaps becoming too hard: remind players at the start that a light, clear tap is all that is needed; model it once
- Confusion about which hand is out: only the hand that received the “FOUR” slap moves out, not the whole player
- Singing gets out of sync: one staff member leads the chant at a clear, steady pace for the first round
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Echo Clap”: staff claps a short rhythm; group echoes it back; repeat with growing complexity
- “Name Tap”: pass a hand tap around the circle with each player saying their name as it reaches them
Debrief Questions
- What? “What happened when the slap reached the word FOUR? Was it easy to track?”
- So What? “How did the group’s rhythm change as the game went on?”
- Now What? “What does it take to keep a group in sync? Where does that skill show up outside a game?”
Cleanup and Reset
- No materials to collect
- Players stand and stretch before moving on
