Name & Purpose All Over is a high-energy, whole-group ball game. Both teams race to clear every ball off their side of the field. It builds fast decision-making, team communication, and nonstop movement.
a.k.a. Ball Blitz; Over the Line
Age Band / Group Size / Time / Space Ages 8β16. 12β60 players. 10β20 minutes. Large outdoor field or gym with a clear centre line.
Materials
- Soft foam or nerf balls β 1β2 per player (beach balls also work well)
- 1 jump rope, chalk line, or row of cones to mark the centre line
Quick-Run Card
- Split into two equal teams. Place both teams on opposite sides of the centre line.
- Give each team the same number of balls.
- On “All Over!” every player kicks, throws, or rolls balls to the other side. No holding balls.
- Call “All Over!” again to stop play after the set time.
- Count balls. Fewer balls on your side = your team wins.
Setup & Boundaries Lay a jump rope or cones in a straight line across the centre of the play space. Mark side boundaries with cones. Both teams start behind their own back line. Give each team an equal pile of balls. No player may cross the centre line during play.
How to Play The leader calls “All Over!” to start. Every player immediately picks up or collects a ball and sends it across the line by kicking, rolling, or throwing underhand or overhand β any method is fine. There is no holding: pick it up and move it. When a ball lands on your side, move it back across. The game ends when the leader calls “All Over!” a second time (set a timer β 3 to 5 minutes works well). Count balls on each side. The team with fewer balls wins. For a longer session run three rounds and tally wins.
I-OPt Roles Players choose their own role each round β no assignment needed. Encourage at least three simultaneous approaches:
- Launchers: stand near the centre line and send balls over fast with big kicks or throws.
- Retrievers: chase balls coming onto your side and redirect them quickly.
- Strategists: hang back, survey the whole field, and direct teammates verbally. Players can switch roles between rounds.
Inclusion Supports
- Players who use wheelchairs or have mobility differences can sit near the centre line and bat or push balls across.
- Players with hearing differences: use a visual signal (raised flag or hand wave) alongside the verbal “All Over!” call.
- Players who feel overwhelmed by fast movement can serve as the official ball-counter or timekeeper.
- Offer lighter balloons instead of balls for players with limited arm strength.
- Allow sitting play throughout if standing is difficult.
Stewardship After the game, every player picks up at least two balls and returns them to the storage bag. 30-second reflection: “Name one thing your team did really well at communicating without words.”
Consent Pre-brief: Tell everyone the physical demands before starting β running, bending, throwing. Confirm everyone is comfortable. Say, “If at any point you need to step out, just walk to the sideline β no explanation needed.” Mid-game check-in: After round 1, pause briefly: “Everyone still feeling good? Thumbs up to keep going, thumbs sideways to adjust.” Opt-out/re-entry: A player can step off to the sideline at any moment. They re-enter by stepping back onto the field between rounds or when they are ready.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Ball hits a player in the face | Medium | Use only soft foam or nerf balls; no hard balls |
| Players cross the centre line and collide | Medium | Clearly mark the line; remind players verbally before each round |
| Over-competitive play leads to pushing | Low | Frame the game as team vs. score, not team vs. team; referee firmly |
| Trips on balls underfoot | Medium | Encourage players to stay aware of ground; clear stray balls promptly |
| Players with mobility differences feel excluded | Low | Assign accessible positions near the centre line from the start |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Juggling Handshake: pair up and shake hands while balancing a ball on the back of each person’s free hand for 20 seconds.
- Two-minute stretch focusing on arms, hips, and knees.
- Quick round of “Catch My Name” β toss a ball across the circle while saying the catcher’s name.
Debrief What? “What strategy did your team use to move balls faster?” So what? “How did it feel when both sides were moving at full speed? What did you do when things got chaotic?” Now what? “Where else in your life do you need to clear the ‘clutter’ quickly and stay calm while doing it?”
Cleanup & Reset Collect all balls into one bag. Gather and coil the jump rope or stack cones. Leave the play space clear of all equipment. Reset takes under 2 minutes.
