Name & Purpose Box the Leader is a whole-day awareness game. Set it up once in the morning. At any moment β between meals, during a walk, mid-activity β the leader calls “Box!” and four teams race to surround them in a compass formation. The team that lines up correctly and calls their chant first wins that round. The game builds attention, teamwork, and fast group coordination. It works best as an ongoing thread across a full camp day.
a.k.a. Compass Teams | Four Corners Sprint
Age Band / Group Size / Time / Space Ages 8β16 | 16β60 players (4 teams of 4β15) | Set up once in the morning; individual rounds take 30β90 seconds; played at random across a full day | Any space β outdoors, indoors, on a path, at a meal, anywhere the leader can stand
Materials
- None required after initial setup
- Optional: team name tags or wristbands so players remember their team throughout the day
Quick-Run Card Morning setup: split players into 4 teams. Assign each team a compass direction and a chant:
- North β chant: “Ahhhh Okay!”
- South β chant: “South, Wooh!”
- East β chant: “East, the beast to beat!”
- West β chant: “West is the best!”
Each team practises lining up in the correct position relative to the leader:
- North: face the leader’s front
- South: face the leader’s back
- East: face the leader’s right side
- West: face the leader’s left side
When the leader calls “Box!” at any point during the day, all four teams race to form a straight line in their correct position. First full team in place and chanting wins the round.
Setup & Boundaries
- Morning briefing (5 minutes): gather all players and assign teams. Use wristbands or markers if helpful.
- Teach all four chants together. Run one practice Box so teams learn their positions.
- Explain: the leader can call “Box!” at any time, anywhere, for the rest of the day. Teams must come from wherever they are and form up.
- Set a fair rule: teams must be complete β every team member present in the line β before calling their chant. Partial teams do not count.
- Run at least 3β5 rounds across the day. Announce a final score at the end of the day.
How to Play
- At any moment, the leader calls “Box!” clearly and loudly.
- All four teams immediately locate the leader and race to their correct side.
- Each team forms a single straight line facing the appropriate direction relative to the leader.
- When a team’s full line is in place, they shout their chant.
- The leader (or a designated judge nearby) confirms which team was complete and chanting first.
- The round is noted. Play resumes. Another round happens later.
- At the end of the day, total round wins are tallied. The winning team does a victory chant β all four teams join in.
I-OPt Roles Run at least three simultaneously:
- Navigator (1β2 per team): As soon as “Box!” is called, locate the leader, determine which side is yours, and call your team to that position. No running into other teams.
- Line Former (all team members): Sprint to your Navigator’s position, form a straight line, stand shoulder-to-shoulder. Don’t chant until everyone is there.
- Judge (1 counsellor or rotating player): Stands near the leader at all times during the day. Watches all four sides. Calls the winning team. Resolves disputes quickly and finally.
- Anchor (the leader): Stand still once “Box!” is called. Turn slowly if needed so teams can orient. Do not move until all four teams are formed.
Inclusion Supports
- Players with mobility differences: position them as the team’s anchor point β the Navigator orients the line around them first, and the line forms to include them naturally.
- Players who struggle with left/right directional orientation: teach the position as “face the same way the leader is looking” (North) or “face the opposite way” (South) rather than compass terms.
- Players with hearing differences: a visual signal (raised fist = “Box!”) can accompany the verbal call β agree on this in the morning setup.
- Teams with absent members mid-day: agree in advance that a team can substitute any nearby non-team player if one of their members is genuinely unavailable.
Stewardship Action: At the end of the final round, all four teams combine to tidy any space that was disrupted during a round β pick up anything knocked over in the sprint. Reflection (30 seconds): “What did it feel like to have to stop whatever you were doing and respond as a team? What helped your team get into position fast?”
Consent Pre-brief: “Box the Leader is a game we play all day. You’ll need to drop what you’re doing and run to form up when I call ‘Box!’ If there’s ever a moment where you physically can’t respond to a Box call β eating, in a bathroom, during a rest β that’s completely fine. Let your team know at the start of the day.” Mid-game check-in: After the first round, ask each team: “Does everyone know their position? Does everyone know their chant?” Opt-out / re-entry: Any player can sit out one round by stepping back from the line β their team plays one short for that round. They re-join on the next call.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Players collide while racing to the leader | Medium | Enforce walk-jog only β not full sprint; call “Box!” with more warning time in confined spaces |
| Teams dispute who was first | Medium | Designate a Judge before each day starts; Judge’s decision is final and immediate |
| Teams forget their position by mid-day | Low | Give each team a reference card in the morning; spot-check positions in the first two rounds |
| One team consistently wins, lowering others’ morale | Low | Vary the timing of calls to favour different contexts; rotate the Judge role so no bias |
| “Box!” is called during a safety-critical moment | Low | Counsellors brief: “Box!” is never called during water activities, cooking, or moving vehicles |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Compass Walk: Everyone walks around the space. Call a compass direction β everyone faces that direction and freezes. North, South, East, West β 8 reps. Gets directional awareness primed.
- Team Chant Practice: Each team learns and practises their chant for 60 seconds before the day starts. Run all four back-to-back. Builds pride and memorability.
Debrief (Run at end of day, after final round) What? “Which round was your team’s fastest? What made it work?” So what? “What does it take for a group of people to respond quickly to the same signal β no matter where they are or what they’re doing?” Now what? “Where in a real emergency β or just a busy day β could your group benefit from a simple shared signal that means ‘everyone, come together now’?”
Cleanup & Reset
- Collect any wristbands or team markers.
- Tally the day’s round wins and announce the result.
- Run the combined four-team final chant as a celebration.
