Name & Purpose Name Match is a quick, active icebreaker that gets players moving and talking. Everyone counts the letters in their first name, then finds a partner with the same count. It is a simple, low-pressure way to mix groups and start conversations. No teams, no winners β just a partner to work with.
a.k.a. Letter Count Partners | Name Numbers
Age Band / Group Size / Time / Space Ages 8β16. Works with 8β40 players. Allow 5β10 minutes including the partner task. Use any open area where players can move freely β indoors or outdoors.
Materials None.
Quick-Run Card
- Tell everyone to count the letters in their first name silently. Hold up that many fingers to help.
- On “go,” players move around and find someone with the same number of letters in their first name.
- When they find a match, they high-five and stay together as a pair.
- If someone cannot find a match: they may use a nickname, a middle name, or find the person with the closest number of letters.
- Once everyone is paired, give the pair a short task (introduce each other to the wider group, find one thing they have in common, share a favourite camp meal).
Setup & Boundaries No prep required. Remind players before “go” that they should move gently β no running, no pushing. If the space is crowded, use slow walking. Have a plan for odd numbers: the extra player joins the nearest pair to make a trio.
How to Play Stand with your group. Ask everyone to count the letters in their first name. Suggest they hold up fingers to keep track. Give them 20 seconds. Then call “go!” Players walk around, holding up fingers to show their count, and look for someone with the same number. When two players find each other, they pair up. Players with unusual letter counts (very long or very short names) may find pairing harder β encourage them to use a nickname or round to the nearest number. Once pairs form, give them a 2-minute task: “Find out one thing you and your partner both did for the first time this year.” Then bring the group back together and hear a few pairs share.
I-OPt Roles Run at least three simultaneously:
- Searcher β all players; move around and find their match.
- Connector β any player who spots two unpaired players and helps link them.
- Welcome Trio β any pair who spots an unpaired player at the end; they absorb that player into a friendly trio without announcement.
- Conversation Starter β once paired, one partner kicks off the shared task.
- Reporter β once paired, one partner takes the lead on sharing back to the group.
Inclusion Supports
- Players who are uncomfortable sharing their name (for cultural, personal, or safety reasons) may use any name they choose β a favourite character, a nickname, any word.
- Players who find counting letters difficult can hold up a number card or use fingers β the facilitator can quietly help anyone who needs it.
- Non-verbal players: show finger count and move toward matching fingers β no spoken words needed to find a partner.
- For players who find moving around socially anxious: the facilitator can pair them quietly before “go” is called.
- Ensure the follow-up task is low-stakes and does not require sharing personal information that any player might find uncomfortable.
Stewardship Take 30 seconds after pairs share back. Ask: “You just connected with someone through your name β something you were given before you could choose anything. What else do names tell us about connection?”
Consent Pre-brief: Players choose which name to use β no one is required to use their legal first name. Mid-game check-in: If a player looks stuck or distressed during the milling phase, the facilitator pairs them directly. Opt-out / re-entry: Any player who does not want to mill around can stand at the edge; the facilitator finds them a partner who comes to them.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Player cannot find a match and feels singled out | Medium | Pre-brief the nickname/closest-number rule; facilitator actively helps |
| Player uncomfortable sharing their name or its origin | LowβMedium | Allow use of any name; no questions asked |
| Crowding or minor collisions during milling | Low | Set pace as walking, not running |
| Follow-up task reveals sensitive personal information | Low | Choose task prompts carefully β avoid family, finances, or health |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Toe-to-toe: stand in a circle, everyone points one foot inward and tries to touch the foot of the person next to them β loosens the group before milling.
- Name wave: go around the circle saying names only β just to hear them and learn them before the game.
Debrief What? Ask: “How many letters did you have? Was finding a match easy or hard?” So what? Ask: “What did you learn about your partner in the follow-up task?” Now what? Ask: “What is one way you could get to know someone new better this week?”
Cleanup & Reset No materials. No reset needed.
