Name & Purpose Shadow Seeker is a quiet, atmospheric awareness game. A few Shadows move silently through a space where all other players stand still with eyes closed. Players use their non-visual senses to detect when a Shadow is standing close behind them. The game builds stillness, mindfulness, and sensory awareness. It is a great game for calming a group.
a.k.a. Ghost (legacy name β acceptable to use with older groups) | Silent Shadow | Presence Game
Age Band / Group Size / Time / Space Ages 8β16. Best with 10β30 players. Allow 10β20 minutes. Use a large open area β indoors or outdoors β where players can spread out and have clear personal space of at least one arm’s length from the nearest neighbour.
Materials None.
Quick-Run Card
- Choose 3β4 players to be Shadows (the seekers). All others are Standing Players.
- Standing Players spread out across the space, find a spot, close their eyes, and stay still.
- Shadows move silently through the space. When a Shadow stands within arm’s reach behind a Standing Player for 10 full seconds, they tap that player lightly on the shoulder.
- Tapped Standing Players open their eyes and sit down quietly on the spot β they become Watchers.
- At any moment, a Standing Player who senses someone behind them may ask quietly, “Is there a shadow behind me?”
- If a Shadow is there: that standing player joins the Shadows. If no Shadow is there: that player sits down as a Watcher.
- Shadows win when all players are seated. Standing Players win if at least one player remains standing when time is called.
Setup & Boundaries Brief the group: no running, no touching except the light shoulder tap, and complete silence from all players (Shadows and Standing Players). Standing Players close their eyes and stand β they do not sit, crouch, or move once play starts. Ensure the play area is clear of trip hazards before Shadows begin moving.
How to Play Ask your group to spread out and find a personal standing spot. Tell them they are about to become extremely still and aware. Choose 3β4 volunteers to be Shadows β send them to one corner while you brief the Standing Players. Standing Players close their eyes. Shadows begin to move. They aim to approach a Standing Player from behind, pause within arm’s reach, and count silently to 10 before tapping. The silent count builds suspense β Shadows who move too fast, or who breathe too loudly, get detected. Standing Players tune in: air movement, the sound of footsteps, the sense of a presence. If they feel something, they whisper their question. The facilitator confirms yes or no β if yes, that player opens their eyes and becomes a Shadow, increasing the pressure on remaining Standing Players. The game ends when time is called or all players are seated.
I-OPt Roles Run at least three simultaneously:
- Shadow β 3β4 players per round; move silently and try to tap Standing Players without being detected.
- Standing Player β all other players at the start; stand still with eyes closed and use senses to detect Shadows.
- Watcher β any player who has been tapped or wrongly guessed; sit quietly and observe the remaining players.
- Timekeeper β the facilitator or a Watcher; calls “time!” at the agreed end point.
- Safety Spotter β the facilitator watches for any trip hazards or collisions during Shadow movement and pauses the game if needed.
Inclusion Supports
- Players who cannot close their eyes (vertigo, anxiety, or sensory reason) can participate as Watchers from the start β full observers who enjoy the atmosphere.
- Players who cannot stand for the duration can sit in a chair with eyes closed β the same rules apply.
- Players who are uncomfortable being silently approached from behind: assign them as Shadows instead; do not place them as Standing Players without their comfort-check.
- Players who prefer not to be touched (even a shoulder tap): agree on an alternative signal β a Shadow can hold a hand just above the shoulder to “hover” for 10 seconds; the Standing Player feels the heat or air change.
- Watchers are encouraged to observe mindfully β they are not eliminated, they are witnessing.
Stewardship After the game, take 30 seconds of stillness together. Ask everyone to stand (or sit) quietly with eyes open. Ask: “You just spent several minutes using your non-visual senses. What did you notice that you usually miss?”
Consent Pre-brief: Explain that Shadows will approach from behind and give a light shoulder tap. Check for anyone who is uncomfortable being approached from behind or touched unexpectedly β offer the hover alternative or assign them as Shadows. Do this check before Shadows are chosen. Mid-game check-in: If any player shows visible distress, the facilitator calls a quiet pause. Opt-out / re-entry: Any player can open their eyes, sit down, and become a Watcher at any time without explanation. They can return as a Shadow in the next round.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Shadow trips on an obstacle while moving silently | Medium | Clear play area of obstacles before play; facilitator stays active as safety spotter |
| Standing Player startled by unexpected touch | Medium | Pre-brief the tap; offer hover alternative; move slowly |
| Player anxiety about eyes-closed standing | LowβMedium | Allow seated-with-eyes-closed alternative; Watcher role available |
| Standing Player feels exposed or vulnerable | Low | Brief the group: everyone is respected; no sneaking up at speed |
| Watcher feels excluded | Low | Frame Watcher as mindful observer, not eliminated player |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Sound map: stand still with eyes closed for 60 seconds and count how many distinct sounds you hear. Share results.
- Mindful walk: group walks slowly around the space with eyes open, then closed, noticing the difference.
Debrief What? Ask: “What senses did you use to detect a Shadow? What gave them away?” So what? Ask: “What was it like to be completely still in a group of people?” Now what? Ask: “When in daily life do you tune out your non-visual senses? What might you notice if you tuned back in?”
Cleanup & Reset No materials. Check the floor for any items that were moved during play and return them.
