Name & Purpose Box Blitz is a high-energy throwing and catching game. Two teams compete to get the most balls into their own box, which is guarded in enemy territory by their Box Person. It builds teamwork, spatial awareness, and strategy under pressure.
a.k.a. Catcher’s Box | Target Blitz | Collect and Defend
Age Band / Group Size / Time / Space Ages 8β16 | 10β30 players (even teams) | 20β30 minutes | Large open field or gym. Minimum 20 m Γ 15 m. Clear centre line required.
Materials
- 20β40 soft balls (foam dodgeballs, beanbags, or soft playground balls)
- 2 large containers β one per team (cardboard boxes, laundry baskets, or large buckets)
- Cones or rope to mark the centre line, box zones, and team territories
- Whistle for start/stop signals
Quick-Run Card
- Divide into two equal teams. Set up the centre line with cones.
- Each team places their box in the opposing team’s territory, roughly 5 m from the back boundary. Mark a 2 m circle around each box β the box zone.
- Each team chooses one Box Person who stands in the opponent’s box zone for the whole round.
- Scatter all balls along the centre line.
- Blow the whistle. Players rush to collect balls and throw them to their Box Person.
- Box Person catches balls and drops them in their team’s box. They cannot leave the box zone.
- Opposing players can swat balls in mid-air but cannot enter the box zone or remove balls already in the box.
- When all balls are off the floor, blow the whistle. Count each box. Most balls = round winner.
- Rotate Box Person roles. Play a best-of-three series.
Setup & Boundaries
- Mark the centre line clearly. Both teams start behind their own half before the whistle.
- Box zones must be visible β use cones or chalk circles.
- The Box Person may not leave their zone for any reason during a round.
- Players may not enter the opponent’s box zone at any time.
- No throwing at the Box Person’s body β throws must aim for the box or the Box Person’s hands.
- Balls that land outside the field boundaries are dead balls and not retrieved mid-round.
How to Play On the whistle, both teams sprint to the centre line, grab balls, and immediately start launching them toward their Box Person in enemy territory. The Box Person calls for the ball, positions themselves, catches it, and drops it in the box. Meanwhile, the opposing team’s players can leap, reach, and bat balls out of the air before they arrive β but the moment a ball is in the box, it is safe. Strategy matters: some players focus on throwing, others on defence (batting away incoming balls), and the Box Person must communicate with their throwers about where to aim. The round ends when every ball is off the ground. Count the boxes, celebrate the round winner, then reset all balls to the centre line for the next round.
I-OPt Roles Three simultaneous role tracks keep all players active in every round:
- Throwers: Collect balls from the centre line and deliver them to the Box Person. May also retrieve balls that land in neutral areas.
- Defenders: Stay in the team’s own half and bat down or intercept incoming throws heading toward the opposing Box Person.
- Box Person: Stationed in enemy territory β communicates with throwers using hand signals or short calls (“Left!” “High!”) and focuses on safe catches and clean drops into the box. All three roles run at the same time. Teams decide their own split β no player is sidelined.
Inclusion Supports
- Players who cannot run can serve as Box Person (standing in the fixed zone) or as a designated short-range thrower positioned closer to the centre line.
- Players who cannot throw overhand may use underarm rolls or use a ramp/chute to direct balls toward the box.
- Reduce the distance between teams for younger or less physically able groups.
- For mixed-ability groups, place the box closer to the centre line to make it more accessible.
- No player is ever eliminated β everyone plays every round.
Stewardship After the final round, both teams collect every ball together and store them. Return boxes/baskets and cones to storage. 30-second reflection: “You just worked with people who were on the opposite team. Name one thing you noticed a player on the other team do really well.”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “We’re throwing soft balls today. If you feel unsafe at any point β too many balls, too fast β call ‘Pause!’ loudly and we all stop. No questions asked.”
- Mid-game check-in: Between rounds ask: “Is the throwing distance working for everyone? Do we need to adjust the box zone closer?”
- Opt-out / re-entry: Any player can move to a spectator/coaching role during a round. They re-enter at the start of the next round in any role they choose.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Ball hits a player’s face | Medium | Use soft foam balls only; enforce no-head-level throwing rule |
| Players collide rushing for balls at centre line | Medium | Stagger start β each team rushes from their side, not across the line |
| Box Person feels exposed or targeted | Low | Clarify rule: throws must aim for box or hands, never the body; enforce immediately |
| Uneven teams create frustrating lopsided rounds | Low | Re-balance teams between rounds if score gap is large |
| Players drag balls out of the box | Low | Explain the rule clearly pre-game; apply a ball-removal penalty (remove one ball from offending team’s box) |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Throw and Catch Circle: Whole group in a circle, one ball. Call a name, throw to them. Build to two then three balls simultaneously. Warms up throwing accuracy and tracking.
- Speed Sort: Scatter all balls randomly. On “Go!” everyone sorts them into two piles by colour in 30 seconds. Builds the quick-movement energy the game requires.
Debrief
- What? “What role did your team create? Did you stick to it or did it change during the round?”
- So what? “When your Box Person was calling for the ball, what helped you hear them over the noise? What gets in the way of communication under pressure?”
- Now what? “Think about a team you’re part of β sports, school project, family chores. What one communication habit from Box Blitz would help that team?”
Cleanup & Reset Collect all balls into a bag or bin. Stack boxes flat if cardboard, or nest containers. Retrieve all cones. Check the field for any stray balls. Full reset takes under 3 minutes.
