Name & Purpose Describe It Without Saying It is a word-description game where players try to get their team to say a target word β without using that word or any of the forbidden words listed on their card. It builds vocabulary, creative thinking, and lateral communication. Use it as an energiser, a rainy-day activity, or a language warm-up.
a.k.a. Forbidden Word | Word Wall
Age Band / Group Size / Time / Space Ages 8β16 | 6β30 players in teams of 3β5 | 15β25 minutes | Any indoor or outdoor space. Each team needs a loose cluster; teams can run simultaneously so the session moves fast.
Materials
- Pre-written description cards: each card lists a target word at the top and 3β5 forbidden words below it. Counsellor writes these before the session. Example: Target: ELEPHANT / Forbidden: BIG, TRUNK, AFRICA, GREY, ANIMAL.
- Timer or stopwatch (60 seconds per turn)
- Optional: whiteboard or flip-chart for a shared scoreboard
Quick-Run Card
- Divide into teams of 3β5. Each team sits or stands in a cluster.
- One Describer per team picks or is given a card.
- Timer starts. Describer describes the target word using any words except the forbidden ones and except the target word itself. No gestures, no sound effects (adjust this rule for younger groups if needed).
- Team shouts guesses. Correct guess = 1 point. Time up without a correct guess = 0 points.
- Pass the Describer role to the next team member. New card. Repeat.
- After all players have described once, tally scores. Or skip scoring and play for fun.
Setup & Boundaries Prepare cards in advance. Aim for 3β4 cards per player so rounds run without interruption. Sort cards by difficulty: easy (concrete nouns like BICYCLE or PIZZA), medium (verbs like CELEBRATE or WHISPER), hard (abstract concepts like LOYALTY or PATIENCE). Start easy. Decide before play whether gestures are allowed or not β simpler for younger groups to allow them, more challenging for older groups to ban them.
How to Play Teams sit in clusters. Each round, the Describer picks the top card from their team’s deck. On the signal, the timer starts and the Describer talks β describing, giving examples, comparing to other things, using synonyms, asking the team questions β anything except the target word and the forbidden words. Teammates shout answers freely. If the Describer accidentally says a forbidden word, the counsellor (or a peer judge) calls it out and the turn ends with no point. If the team guesses correctly, they score one point and the Describer can pass to the next card if time remains. At 60 seconds, the round ends. The Describer role moves one seat clockwise. New card, new round. Run simultaneously across all teams to maximise energy. After everyone has described at least once, announce the score and move to the debrief.
I-OPt Roles Three simultaneous participation paths:
- Describer (active communicator) β holds the card and talks. Suits players who are verbal and enjoy being “on stage.”
- Guesser (active responder) β listens and shouts answers. Suits players who prefer to react rather than lead.
- Judge (monitor) β one team member each round watches for forbidden words and signals a violation. Suits players who like rules and detail. All three roles rotate so every player experiences each one.
Inclusion Supports
- Players with lower literacy can have the card read aloud quietly by the counsellor before their Describer turn starts (timer does not run during this).
- Players who find verbal description difficult can use an “allows gestures” variant of the card (mark these cards with a star before the session).
- Players learning English as a second language can describe in either language and teammates can guess in either language. Celebrate multilingual descriptions.
- Reduce forbidden words from 5 to 2 for younger or lower-confidence players.
- Allow teams to pass a card (skip it, no penalty) once per round.
Stewardship Collect all cards after play. Store them for reuse in a labelled envelope or box. 30-second reflection: think of a word you heard described today in a way you never would have thought of. Words can mean different things to different people. That is not a problem β it is interesting.
Consent Pre-brief: “You will take turns describing words to your team. If a card comes up that has a word that feels uncomfortable or personal for you β just say ‘pass’ and take the next card. No explanation needed.” Mid-game check-in: After two full rounds, ask: “Is the difficulty level right? Do you want harder cards or easier ones?” Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can hand the Describer role to the next person immediately. They remain as a Guesser or Judge that round and re-enter the Describer rotation next time.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Cards contain culturally unfamiliar words that disadvantage some players | Medium | Counsellor previews all cards; use concrete, universally familiar concepts for the first set. |
| Competitive pressure makes players anxious about their turn | LowβMedium | Frame the scoring as a fun tracker, not a high-stakes contest; celebrate creative descriptions regardless of whether the team guessed. |
| Players argue about whether a forbidden word was used | Low | Designate a Judge role in each team whose call is final; keep it light and move on. |
| Teams at different difficulty levels | Low | Use difficulty-sorted card decks; easier cards for younger or newer groups. |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- One-Word Round: Go around the circle. Everyone says one word to describe the weather today β no sentences. Gets players thinking in words quickly.
- Association Chain: Counsellor says a word, next player says the first word that comes to mind, next player responds to that word, and so on around the circle for 60 seconds. Primes word-association thinking before the game.
Debrief What? Ask: “What was the hardest word to describe? What strategy worked best?” So what? Ask: “When do we need to explain something without using the obvious words β at school, at home, at a job? What skills does that take?” Now what? Ask: “Think of someone you find hard to communicate with. Is there a way you could try describing what you mean differently instead of using the same words that are not working?”
Cleanup & Reset Collect all cards, sort by difficulty, and return to the storage envelope. Put away the timer.
