Quick-Run Card
- Players sit in a circle. Leader stands and dances in the centre.
- Leader taps selected players on the head and says “start bopping right now.”
- Tapped players join the leader and keep dancing together.
- Leader calls “Bop Bop Over!” Everyone scrambles back to a spot.
- Last one back becomes the new leader. Previous leader joins the circle.
Setup and Boundaries
- Sit in a circle with enough space between players to stand and move freely
- Signal: two claps from staff means pause everything
- Check for obstacles in the centre of the circle before starting
How to Play
- Players sit in a circle. One player starts as the leader and stands in the centre.
- The leader starts bopping, dancing, or moving in any way they like. Players in the circle can clap or hum to add music if there is no speaker.
- The leader moves around the inside of the circle and taps selected players on the head, saying “start bopping right now.”
- Each tapped player joins the centre and starts dancing. They can copy the leader or create their own moves.
- The dancing and tapping continue until the leader chooses to call “Bop Bop Over!”
- On that signal, all boppers (including the leader) run back to find a spot in the circle.
- The last player to reach a spot becomes the new leader. The previous leader takes a seat.
- If the new leader is unsure, they can ask for a volunteer or staff can offer.
- Multiple rounds can be played in quick succession.
I-OPt Options
- Start: A (Active) – Volunteer to be the first leader; S (Support) – Clap and make music from the circle; Q (Quiet) – Sit and nod or sway to the beat; O (Observer) – Watch the first round and join when comfortable
- Mid: A – Dance with full energy in the centre; S – Encourage others in the centre; Q – Do a small seated bop if not tapped yet; O – Watch the leader’s tap pattern and predict who goes next
- Late: A – Create an original move for others to copy; S – Help a hesitant player feel welcome in the centre; Q – Move at your own pace back to a spot; O – Cheer for the new leader
- End: A – Suggest a music track for the next round; S – Help reset the circle; Q – Catch your breath and give a thumbs up; O – Share what move they liked most
Inclusion Adaptations
- The head-tap can be replaced with a shoulder tap or a gentle wave-and-eye-contact cue for players with sensory sensitivities
- Players who prefer not to dance can “bop” by clapping, nodding, or doing any movement that feels right for them
Stewardship Moment
- No materials means no cleanup. Note it: “We just had a dance party with nothing but ourselves.”
- Reflection: “What energy did we bring to this space? What do we want to leave here when we go?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves dancing and moving in the centre of the circle. For those not comfortable dancing in front of others, bopping in place or clapping from the circle is another option that keeps the energy going.”
- Mid-game check: After two rounds, pause and check in. Any player can stay seated and bop without being tapped.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can stay in their spot and not be tapped. They re-enter the game naturally when the next round starts.
Risks and Mitigation
- Collision in the centre when many boppers are dancing: keep the circle large and remind dancers to be aware of the space around them
- A player feels singled out or embarrassed by the head-tap: use the shoulder wave alternative; staff model easy, low-pressure moves
- Same player always ends up being the new leader: rotate the “last back” rule and use volunteer rounds
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Have everyone stand and shake out their hands, feet, and shoulders for 15 seconds before starting
- Do one slow-motion practice round so players know what “Bop Bop Over” feels like
Debrief Questions
- What? “What did it feel like to be tapped and join the centre?”
- So What? “What made the energy in the centre different from sitting in the circle?”
- Now What? “When in your life do you get to just be silly and free? How do you make more room for that?”
Cleanup and Reset
- No materials to collect
- Return any chairs or markers to their original positions
