Name and Purpose
- Secret Word is a low-key awareness and observation game that layers playfully onto any existing activity or free time.
- Players practise listening closely, staying present, and noticing each other’s reactions.
a.k.a.
- Secret Signal, Magic Word
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 6-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Any space, indoors or outdoors
Materials
- No materials required
- Optional: index cards and pencils so players can write down their word privately
Quick-Run Card
- Each player secretly picks a word, writes it down if needed.
- Go about normal conversation or a guided group activity.
- Each time your word is spoken, perform your chosen action (clap, raise hands, make a sound).
- Others watch for patterns and try to guess each person’s word.
- Once guessed, reveal the word and optionally choose a new one.
Setup and Boundaries
- No physical setup required
- Signal: one raised hand from staff means pause; two claps means full stop
- Works as an overlay on other activities or during transitions
- No physical boundaries needed; game travels with the group
How to Play
- Each player privately chooses a common word (a word likely to come up in normal speech, like “the,” “camp,” or “sun”).
- Players go about talking naturally, playing another game, or doing a group activity.
- Each time your word is said by anyone (including yourself), perform your chosen action without drawing attention to why.
- Other players watch, listen, and try to guess each person’s secret word.
- When someone thinks they know another player’s word, they can make a quiet guess.
- Confirmed guesses are celebrated. That player may pick a fresh word and keep playing.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Choose a frequently used word for maximum action; make your signal movement big and energetic
- S (Support): Help a newer player choose a good word; coach quietly
- Q (Quiet): Choose a word that comes up rarely; make your signal a subtle gesture
- O (Observer): Watch the group without choosing a word; try to spot who has what word before anyone else
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who are non-verbal or prefer no movement can use a small hand gesture or a gentle tap on the table as their signal
- Players who find it hard to track speech can work with a partner who whispers when the word is heard
Stewardship Moment
- No materials to clean up
- Reflection: “We used words as a tool here. What are some words in daily life that signal something important to you?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “We are each going to pick a secret word. When your word comes up in conversation, you will do something fun, like clap or wave. For those not comfortable performing in front of others, a small quiet gesture works perfectly.”
- Mid-game check: After a few rounds, pause and ask for a thumbs up, sideways, or down.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players can skip choosing a word and just observe. They can join in by choosing a word at any point.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players choosing offensive words: Give examples of fun, safe words during the pre-brief
- Game fizzling if the word is never spoken: Encourage players to pick common words; staff can model with an easy example
- Social pressure to perform: Remind the group that small, quiet signals are just as valid as big ones
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Word Association: go around the circle, each person says the first word that comes to mind from the previous player’s word
- “Most Likely To Say”: quickly guess which player in the group says a given word most often
Debrief Questions
- What? “What word did you choose, and did it come up? What did you notice about how carefully you were listening?”
- So What? “Why is it interesting that a small action can carry a hidden meaning?”
- Now What? “Are there moments in your day when you listen more closely than usual? What makes the difference?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect any index cards; recycle or reuse for the next round
- No other cleanup needed
