Name and Purpose
- Sound and Fury is a creative expression game that builds confidence, silliness, and group connection.
- Players practise leading, following, and celebrating each other’s creativity in a low-pressure setting.
a.k.a.
- Sound Circle, Echo Motion, Copy Cat Circle
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-30 players | 10-15 minutes | Any open space for a standing circle
Materials
- None required
Quick-Run Card
- Stand in a circle with the whole group.
- First player creates a sound and a motion at the same time.
- The entire group repeats that exact sound and motion together.
- The next person in the circle creates a new sound and motion.
- Continue until everyone has had at least one turn to lead.
Setup and Boundaries
- Form a standing circle with enough space for movement (arm’s length apart)
- Signal: staff raises both hands = pause; clap pattern = gather in
- Check the area for tripping hazards or uneven ground
How to Play
- The group stands in a circle. Staff explains: “Each person will make a sound and a movement. Then we all copy it together.”
- The first player steps slightly forward (or stays in place) and performs their sound and motion.
- The whole group repeats the sound and motion together, matching it as closely as they can.
- The next person clockwise takes their turn with a brand new sound and motion.
- Continue around the circle. Staff can call for a second or third round if energy is high.
- Optional challenge round: speed it up, or try combining two people’s sounds and motions.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Full participation, big sounds and big motions on your turn
- S (Support): Enthusiastically copy others’ sounds and motions, cheer after each one
- Q (Quiet): Do a smaller version of the motion and a softer sound on your turn, or simply gesture
- O (Observer): Stand in the circle, watch and smile, join in copying when you feel ready. No pressure to lead until you choose to
Inclusion Adaptations
- Seated players can do upper-body motions and sounds from a chair within the circle
- Players who are non-verbal or prefer not to make sounds can do a motion only; the group copies just the motion
Stewardship Moment
- No materials to clean up. Use the moment to appreciate the space: “Look around the circle. We used zero stuff and had a great time. That is low-impact fun.”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game is about being silly together. You will get a turn to lead a sound and motion. For those not comfortable leading right away, you can pass and we will come back to you, or you can do a simple wave. No pressure.”
- Mid-game check: After halfway around the circle, pause. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. How is everyone feeling?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Anyone can say “pass” on their turn. They can jump in later by saying “I’m ready.”
Risks and Mitigation
- Players feeling self-conscious about leading: normalise silliness by having staff go first with an exaggerated, goofy example
- Players copying in a mocking way: set the tone early that copying is celebrating, not teasing. Staff narrates: “We are copying because we think it is brilliant.”
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Name and gesture”: go around the circle, each person says their name with a small gesture, group echoes
- “Shake it out”: everyone shakes hands for 8 counts, then feet, then whole body
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was it like to have everyone copy your sound and motion?”
- So What? “What did you notice about how the group’s energy changed as we went around?”
- Now What? “When in your life does it feel good to be a little silly with other people?”
Cleanup and Reset
- No materials to collect
- Check the space for any personal items left on the ground
