Name and Purpose
- Alphabet Race builds vocabulary, quick thinking, and teamwork through a fast-paced writing relay.
- Works well as a warm-up, rainy-day activity, or cabin challenge.
a.k.a.
- Word Dash, ABC Relay
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-40 players (2+ teams) | 10-20 minutes | Indoor classroom, hall, or covered outdoor space with a vertical writing surface
Materials
- 1 large sheet of paper or whiteboard section per team, with A-Z written vertically
- 1 marker per team in a distinct colour
- Eraser or correction tape
- Optional: category prompt cards (prepared in advance for faster facilitation)
- Optional: timer (phone or sand timer)
Quick-Run Card
- Write A to Z down each team’s sheet before play begins.
- Call a category (e.g., Animals, Foods, Countries, Superheroes).
- Teams send one player at a time to write one word beside one letter.
- Players return, tag the next person, who takes a turn.
- First team to fill all 26 letters with valid words wins the round. Run 2-3 rounds with new categories.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mount paper or divide the whiteboard so each team has their own visible column.
- Set a start line 2-3 metres from the writing surface so players have a short jog rather than a crowd around the board.
- Signal: leader calls “Go!” to start each round and “Stop!” to end.
- Ensure writing surfaces are at a reachable height for all players.
How to Play
- Divide players into two or more teams of equal size.
- Announce the category for the round (e.g., “Animals”).
- On “Go!” the first player on each team runs to the board and writes one word beside any letter that matches the category.
- They run back and tag the next player.
- Play continues until one team fills all 26 letters, or time runs out.
- Teams check each other’s lists: any disputed word is voted on by the group.
- Run 2-3 rounds, changing categories each time.
- Points: 1 point per valid word. Bonus round: longest word earns an extra point.

Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who find running difficult can walk to the board. The relay still works.
- For players who find writing challenging, a support partner can stand beside them and help spell if needed (word still counts for their team).
- Category prompt cards reduce the cognitive load of coming up with words on the spot.
Stewardship Moment
- Use whiteboards over paper whenever possible to reduce single-use waste.
- If paper is used, collect sheets after play and use the blank back for future activities or recycle them.
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This is a relay writing game. You will jog to the board, write one word, and come back. For those not comfortable with running, walking is completely fine and your turn counts just as much.”
- Mid-game check: after round one, ask: “Was the pace okay? Did anyone need more time?” Adjust the start-line distance if needed.
- Opt-out/re-entry: any player may sit out a round and return for the next one without explanation.
Risks and Mitigation
- Crowding at the board: one player per team at the board at a time. Set and enforce this from the start.
- Marker fumes in enclosed spaces: use low-odour markers; ensure room is ventilated.
- Competitive frustration: remind players this is a vocabulary game, not a test. All words are valid if the group agrees.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “A to Z Shout”: whole group shouts the alphabet together as fast as possible, just to get energy moving.
- “Category Brainstorm”: give teams 60 seconds to list as many animals (or foods) as they can verbally before the relay starts.
Debrief Questions
- What? “Which letters gave your team the most trouble? Which ones were easy?”
- So What? “How did your team decide who went when? Did anyone help a teammate who was stuck?”
- Now What? “Where else do you rely on your team to fill in gaps you can’t fill yourself?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Cap and collect markers.
- Remove or erase all writing from the board.
- Recycle or repurpose any paper used.
