Name and Purpose
- Balloon Pop Relay is a high-energy, fast-moving game that builds excitement and gets groups laughing together.
- Works well as an energiser or end-of-day celebration activity.
a.k.a.
- Balloon Rush, Pop Dash
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-40 players | 10-15 minutes | Open indoor gym or flat outdoor area. Remove sharp objects and furniture from the play space before starting.
Materials
- 30-40 latex-free biodegradable balloons (one bag is sufficient for most groups)
- Pencil and tally sheet or whiteboard for the scorekeeper
- Broom and dustpan or garbage bag for cleanup
- Flat, clear space
Quick-Run Card
- Inflate and scatter balloons across the play area.
- On “Go!” players pop as many balloons as they can by sitting on them.
- Each pop: call “Score!” and raise one hand. Scorekeeper tallies.
- Variation rounds: pop by squeezing between the knees; pop by jumping with both feet; pop by squeezing between two players.
- When all balloons are gone, total scores and celebrate. Then sweep up together.
Setup and Boundaries
- Clear the space of all chairs, furniture, and sharp objects before play.
- Scatter balloons across the full space so players spread out rather than cluster.
- Signal: “Go!” to start; 1 whistle = pause; 2 whistles = game over.
- Staff stand at the corners to monitor for collisions and falls.
- Note: this activity involves sharp popping sounds. Staff will already be aware of any campers who are sensitive to sudden loud noises.
How to Play
- Players start at the edge of the space.
- On “Go!” players move through the space and pop balloons by sitting on them (standard round).
- When a balloon pops, the player calls “Score!” and raises their hand. The scorekeeper marks one tally.
- Players immediately move to the next balloon.
- Variation rounds (run one or two after the standard round):
- Knee Squeeze: pop a balloon by placing it between both knees and squeezing.
- Jump Pop: drop a balloon on the ground and jump on it with both feet.
- Partner Pop: two players hold a balloon between them (back to back or shoulder to shoulder) and squeeze together until it pops. Both players score.
- No player is eliminated. All players score independently.
- When all balloons are popped, call time, tally scores, and celebrate.
I-OPt Options

Inclusion Adaptations
- The Jump Pop variation can be done by stomping with one foot for players who prefer not to jump.
- The Partner Pop variation is a great way to include players who find sitting on the floor difficult.
- Players sensitive to loud popping sounds may choose the Knee Squeeze variation, which produces a quieter pop; or they may take the scorekeeper role.
Stewardship Moment
- Balloons are single-use. Use biodegradable latex-free balloons and collect every fragment after play. Balloon pieces in nature are a hazard for wildlife.
- Brief the group: “Every piece of balloon needs to come in off the floor. Wildlife can’t tell the difference between a balloon and food.”
- Cleanup goal: all balloon pieces collected in under 60 seconds.
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves popping balloons by sitting on them or jumping on them. The pops are loud. For those not comfortable with the popping sounds, the Knee Squeeze variation and the scorekeeper role are quieter options.”
- Mid-game check: after round one, pause. “Is the noise level okay for everyone? Any adjustments before the next round?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: players may step to the sideline at any time and re-enter for the next variation round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Falls when sitting on balloons: balloons roll. Brief players to place a foot on the balloon to hold it still before sitting. Staff watch for falls, especially on smooth floors.
- Collision in a fast-moving group: keep the play space proportional to the group size. If the group is large, scatter balloons across a bigger area.
- Loud pop startle response: brief staff in advance. Players with relevant sensitivities will already be known to staff.
- Balloon fragments: every fragment must be collected immediately after play. Assign a dedicated cleanup team of 2-3 players.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Balloon Juggle”: each player gets one balloon and tries to keep it in the air for 30 seconds. No hands. Warms up movement and laughter before the main game.
- “Balloon Bop”: pairs bop a balloon back and forth for 60 seconds without letting it touch the ground. Warms up coordination and spatial awareness.
Debrief Questions
- What? “How many did you get? What was your best strategy?”
- So What? “What happened to your energy level during the game? When did it peak?”
- Now What? “Where else in your week could you use a 10-minute burst of full-effort fun?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect every balloon fragment from the floor.
- Sweep or vacuum if playing indoors.
- Deflate and dispose of any un-popped balloons in the waste bin.
