Name and Purpose
- Clothespin Dash is a fast-moving social game that builds awareness, quick thinking, and friendly interaction.
- Players practise spatial awareness and light strategy while staying engaged and on the move.
a.k.a.
- Peg Swap, Pin Frenzy
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-40 players | 10-15 minutes | Large open area or gym, minimum 15m x 15m
Materials
- 7 clothespins per player (standard wooden or plastic spring-clip type)
- Optional: clip-on vest loops or fabric strips for players who prefer not to have pins on their clothing
- 4 cones for boundary markers
Quick-Run Card
- Give each player 7 clothespins to clip onto their own clothing or vest.
- On one short whistle, everyone moves and tries to clip pins onto others.
- Only one pin per person per interaction . move on immediately.
- Two whistles means pause in place.
- After 5 minutes, fewest pins on you earns a round point.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark a clear play area with 4 cones
- Signal: 1 whistle = go; 2 whistles = stop and freeze; 3 whistles = gather at centre
- Check the floor or ground for wet patches, gravel, or uneven footing before play
How to Play
- Each player starts with 7 clothespins clipped onto their clothing or vest.
- On the signal, everyone moves freely inside the boundary and tries to clip their pins onto other players.
- Only one pin may be clipped per interaction . players must move to someone else after each clip.
- Players may try to remove pins others have clipped on them, but only while standing still for 3 seconds.
- After 5 minutes, the whistle signals the end of the round. The player with the fewest pins wins a round point.
- Reset and play again, or rotate a rule variation (e.g., pins only on sleeves).
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Run freely, clip and dodge across the full space
- S (Support): Help a partner track their pin count, alert them to incoming clippers
- Q (Quiet): Walk-only participation, clip and collect at a relaxed pace
- O (Observer): Watch from the edge, count pins on players, call out round totals
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players with fine motor challenges can use larger binder clips or hook-and-loop fabric tabs instead of spring clothespins
- Vest loops or shoulder strap clips provided for players not comfortable with pins on their personal clothing
Stewardship Moment
- After each round, do a 30-second pin sweep: all players collect any dropped pins from the ground before the next round begins
- Prompt: “These pins can be reused hundreds of times. Let’s make sure we find them all.”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “In this game you’ll be clipping small pins onto each other’s clothing. For those not comfortable with anyone touching their clothing directly, clip-on vests and strap loops are another option . just let me know and we’ll set you up.”
- Mid-game check: After round one, pause briefly. “How’s everyone feeling? Any adjustments needed before round two?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Raise a hand to step to the sideline at any time. Call “In!” to rejoin at the next round or any moment play is live.
Risks and Mitigation
- Pins dropped on ground create a slip hazard: do a pin sweep between every round
- Players reaching awkwardly and bumping heads: remind players to approach from the side, not face-to-face
- Pins snagged on hair or jewellery: remind players to clip only onto clothing or vest loops, not hair or accessories
- Overcrowding in centre: staff redirect clusters to open areas of the space
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Handshake Mingle”: players walk through the space greeting each other with a high five and saying one fun fact
- “Freeze and Point”: on whistle, everyone freezes and points to the nearest boundary cone
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was your strategy . were you mostly clipping, protecting, or both?”
- So What? “How did your approach change once you realised others were targeting you?”
- Now What? “When in real life do you have to juggle defending yourself and going on the offence at the same time?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all clothespins from players and ground
- Count pins to confirm full set is recovered
- Return cones and store pins in a bag or bin for next use
