Name and Purpose
- Pit Stop Race is a lively circle game using silly movement challenges to keep everyone active and laughing.
- Players practise listening, creative movement, and a little friendly racing.
a.k.a.
- Car Rally, Circuit Run
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-40 players | 10-20 minutes | Open outdoor area or gymnasium; circular formation
Materials
- Optional: cones to mark the circle
- Whistle
Quick-Run Card
- Sit in a circle. Number off 1-4 and give each number a car name.
- Leader calls a car name. Those players stand and run around the outside of the circle back to their spot.
- Leader may add a car condition that changes how they move (hop, crawl, make noise, etc.).
- All players who complete the circuit get a cheer. No scoring, no elimination.
- Vary the conditions to keep it fresh. End with everyone running at once for the final lap.
Setup and Boundaries
- Arrange players in a circle, seated, with space between them
- Mark the running lane just outside the circle with cones if the space is open and boundaries are unclear
- Signal: 1 short whistle = stop moving and sit down; leader’s voice = primary cue during play
- Check the running surface for wet patches or obstacles before play
How to Play
- Players sit in a large circle and number off 1-4.
- Assign each number a car name. For example: 1s are Rockets, 2s are Zoombas, 3s are Rumblers, 4s are Sparklers. Make them together as a group for more buy-in.
- The leader calls a car name. Those players jump up and run around the outside of the circle, returning to their original spot.
- The leader can add a car condition at any point:
- Flat Tyre: hop on one foot
- Out of Gas: crab walk
- Turbo Boost: sprint
- No Muffler: make as much noise as possible
- Traffic Jam: walk in slow motion
- Every player who completes the circuit gets a cheer from the circle.
- There is no elimination and no winner. The goal is to try each condition and have fun.
- Optional finale: call all four car names at once for one big lap.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Run each condition fully; try to be the first back to your spot
- S (Support): Lead the cheering from the circle while others run; call out encouragement
- Q (Quiet): Move through the condition at a comfortable pace; participate without racing
- O (Observer): Suggest a new car condition to the leader; watch one round and join the next
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who cannot run may walk, wheel, or move in their own way through the circuit. The condition labels can be adapted (e.g., “Flat Tyre” = one slow arm movement per step).
- Seated players in the circle can do a seated version of each condition (upper body only) while waiting for their turn.
Stewardship Moment
- No materials needed beyond cones. Quick 30-second sweep of the area after play.
- Reflection: “This game needs nothing but your body and your imagination. What else can you play that costs nothing and leaves nothing behind?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “We will run, hop, and make noise in this game. All the movement conditions are optional. For those not comfortable with a particular movement, any way you can move through the circle counts.”
- Mid-game check: After a few rounds, ask: “Is the pace okay? Does anyone want to suggest a condition?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Stay seated for a round if needed. Jump back in whenever ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- Collision on the running lane: remind players to run in the same direction (always clockwise or always counter-clockwise)
- One foot hopping on uneven ground: check surface; allow players to choose a different movement if the ground is wet or rough
- Overexcitement leading to pushing: remind players before each car call that it is a fun circuit, not a contact race
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Ask players to make their best car sound before the game begins. Let a few share theirs with the group.
- One slow practice lap for everyone together before numbered groups are called.
Debrief Questions
- What? “Which condition was hardest? Which was most fun?”
- So What? “How did it feel when you had to move in a silly way in front of everyone?”
- Now What? “When is it useful to be able to laugh at yourself or try something ridiculous?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect cones if used
- 30-second area sweep
- No other materials to return
