Name and Purpose
- Musical Balls is a fast, energetic variation on Musical Chairs using soft balls instead of seats.
- Players practise quick reactions, spatial awareness, and graceful transitions in and out of active play.
a.k.a.
- Musical Chairs (ball variation)
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Large open gym or outdoor flat space
Materials
- Assorted soft balls . 1 fewer than the number of players (foam balls, rubber playground balls, or beanbags)
- Music source: portable speaker and a staff playlist
- Cones to mark the play circle perimeter (optional but recommended)
- 1 clipper or scoresheet for Sideline Crew roles
Quick-Run Card
- Place balls in the centre of the space. Players form a circle around them.
- Music plays . all players walk (or dance) around the circle.
- Music stops . players run in and each grab one ball.
- The player without a ball joins the Sideline Crew with an active job (DJ assistant, head counter, cheerleader).
- Remove one ball and restart. Highest round reached = individual goal.
Setup and Boundaries
- Place balls in a loose cluster in the centre, not stacked or touching closely
- Mark the walking circle with cones so players stay at a consistent distance from the balls
- Signal: music stopping is the go-signal; 2 whistles = freeze and gather
- Check the floor for wet spots or loose equipment before play
- Staff awareness: this activity involves quick direction changes. Players with relevant mobility considerations will already be known to staff.
How to Play
- Arrange soft balls in the centre. Players form a circle at least 3 metres from the balls.
- Music starts. Players walk (or move at their own pace) around the circle.
- When music stops, players run to the centre and each grab one ball.
- The player without a ball becomes the round’s Sideline Crew member. They choose a job from the Sideline Crew board: DJ assistant (controls music start/stop next round), head counter (counts players in), or hype person (encourages remaining players).
- One ball is removed from the next round.
- Play continues. Each player tracks which round they were last active in as their personal best.
- Final player holding the last ball wins that round. Celebrate everyone’s personal best round number.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Run and compete for a ball each round
- S (Support): Take a Sideline Crew role . DJ, counter, or hype person . from the moment you join the sideline
- Q (Quiet): Walk the circle at a calm pace and participate in the grab at your own speed
- O (Observer): Watch, cheer, and choose to join at the start of any new round
Inclusion Adaptations
- Beanbags instead of round balls for players who find rolling objects hard to grab
- Allow a walk-only pace throughout . no running required
- Sideline Crew roles are genuine responsibilities, not consolation prizes. Brief them as real jobs before the game starts.
Stewardship Moment
- Use soft reusable balls or beanbags. Nothing single-use.
- 60-second ball collect at the end: each Sideline Crew member retrieves two balls and stacks them neatly.
Consent
- Pre-brief: “In this game, everyone eventually moves to the sideline . that is part of the design. The Sideline Crew has real jobs that help the game run. For those who prefer to start in a Sideline Crew role right away, that is a great option too.”
- For those not comfortable with any part of this activity, sitting out or joining as an observer is another option.
- Mid-game check: After 3 rounds, pause. Thumbs up, sideways, or down . how is the energy?
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players can step back at any time. Sideline Crew members can re-enter at the start of any new full game.
Risks and Mitigation
- Collision at the ball cluster: space balls at least half a metre apart and remind players to slow down as they reach the centre
- Ball underfoot causing a slip: use flat beanbags or foam balls on hard floors
- Sideline player feeling left out: pre-brief Sideline Crew jobs before the game so they feel purposeful from the first round
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Slow-Mo Freeze: play slow music, players walk in slow motion. On pause, they freeze in a funny shape.
- Ball Juggle: each player holds one ball and tries to keep it in the air for 10 seconds.
Debrief Questions
- What? “What happened when the music stopped? What did you notice about yourself and others?”
- So What? “How did it feel to move to the Sideline Crew? What made that easier or harder?”
- Now What? “When have you had to step back from something active and find a new way to contribute?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all balls and store in a bag or bin
- Stack or remove cones
- Check floor for any equipment left behind
