Name and Purpose
- Swat builds alertness, quick reactions, and the thrill of a safe chase in a circle format.
- Players practise anticipation, speed, and fair play.
a.k.a.
- Duck Duck Swat, Boffer Tag Circle
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-25 players | 10-15 minutes | Flat indoor or outdoor space, enough room for a circle of players with 1m between each spot
Materials
- 1 pool noodle or foam boffer
- 1 poly-spot per player, plus 1 extra for the centre
Quick-Run Card
- Players stand on poly-spots in a circle. The noodle rests on the centre spot.
- “It” picks up the noodle and walks slowly around the outside of the circle.
- “It” gently taps a player on the shoulders or upper back.
- Tapped player picks up the noodle and tries to swat “It” before “It” sits on the tapped player’s empty spot.
- Swatted before reaching the spot: “It” tries again. Reached the spot safely: tapped player becomes the new “It.”
Setup and Boundaries
- Lay poly-spots in a circle, evenly spaced, with one extra spot in the centre for the noodle.
- Establish the safe swat zone before starting: shoulders and upper back only. Demonstrate.
- Signal: 1 short whistle = freeze; 2 whistles = stop and gather.
- Check the floor for any trip hazards around the circle path.
- If using chairs instead of poly-spots, use stable chairs on a flat surface. Remind players not to lean backwards.
How to Play
- All players stand on a poly-spot in a circle. The pool noodle rests on the centre spot.
- One player starts as “It.” “It” picks up the noodle and walks around the outside of the circle.
- “It” chooses a player to tap with the noodle on the shoulders or upper back (the safe zone), then keeps walking.
- The tapped player picks up a noodle from the centre spot and tries to swat “It” before “It” reaches and stands on the tapped player’s empty spot.
- If “It” is swatted before reaching the spot, “It” returns the noodle to the centre and tries again.
- If “It” reaches the empty spot safely, the tapped player becomes the new “It.”
- “It” who cannot find a new player after 3 attempts passes the noodle to a volunteer from the circle.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Play as “It” or the tapped player; run and swat.
- S (Support): Watch “It” closely and call out encouraging words to both players.
- Q (Quiet): Stand on your spot, stay alert, and react when chosen.
- O (Observer): Count how many successful swats happen; watch for patterns in where “It” walks.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who use wheelchairs or mobility aids can participate fully: wheel or move around the outside path at their own pace.
- The swat zone can be the top of the shoulder only for players with sensory sensitivities.
Stewardship Moment
- Pool noodles and poly-spots last for years when stored correctly. After play, return them dry and undamaged.
- Reflection: “How long have these materials been used at camp? What keeps them going?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves a light tap with a foam noodle on the shoulders or upper back. The safe zone is shoulders and upper back only. For those not comfortable with any contact, the score-counting role is a great option.”
- Mid-game check: After 5 minutes, pause. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. How is everyone going?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Step off your spot and move to the side at any time. Raise a hand to take a vacated spot when ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- “It” swatting too hard: reinforce that the tap is gentle; demonstrate the correct force before play.
- Tripping while running around the outside of the circle: keep the circle path clear of obstacles.
- Chair instability: use poly-spots as default; if chairs must be used, ensure they are stable and players are reminded not to lean back.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Walk the Circle”: everyone walks around the outside of the circle path once at a normal pace to get familiar with the space.
- “Tap and Freeze”: staff demonstrates the correct tap zone on a volunteer.
Debrief Questions
- What? “What did you have to pay attention to while waiting on your spot?”
- So What? “How did it feel to be “It”? What made it tricky?”
- Now What? “Where do you need quick reactions in your day at camp or at home?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Return pool noodle to storage.
- Stack poly-spots.
- Scan the circle for anything left behind.
