Name and Purpose
- Tortoise Tag is a freeze-and-rescue tag game with a built-in safe pose.
- Players practise spatial awareness, quick movement, and helping each other.
a.k.a.
- Frozen Tag (Tortoise), Turtle Tag
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Large flat space, at least 20m x 20m
Materials
- 4-6 cones for boundary markers
- 1-2 coloured vests or pinnies to identify “It” players
- 1 whistle
- Flat, even ground
Quick-Run Card
- Mark the play area with cones.
- Choose 2-3 “It” players; give them vests so they’re easy to spot.
- “It” tags other players; tagged players freeze in place.
- Frozen players can be unfrozen by a free teammate touching their shoulder.
- Safe pose: lie on your back with hands and feet in the air (tortoise pose), safe for 10 seconds only.
- Rotate “It” roles every 3-4 minutes by counsellor call.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark a clear rectangular boundary with cones; adjust size to group (smaller = more action)
- Signal: 1 short whistle = pause; 2 whistles = stop and gather
- Check for uneven ground, holes, or slippery patches before play
- “It” players wear coloured vests for easy identification
How to Play
- Two or three players start as “It” and wear vests.
- On the signal, “It” tries to tag other players with a light shoulder touch.
- Tagged players freeze in place, arms at their sides.
- Any free player can unfreeze a frozen teammate by touching their shoulder and saying “Free!”
- Safe pose: a player may lie on their back with hands and feet in the air (tortoise pose). They are safe from tagging while in this pose, for a maximum of 10 seconds per use.
- After 10 seconds in tortoise pose, the player must stand up and move.
- The counsellor calls a role switch every 3-4 minutes. “It” players hand their vests to 2-3 volunteers and become free runners.
- No one sits out. Tagged players are frozen in place, still visible and part of the action, until freed.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Run, dodge, and help free frozen teammates
- S (Support): Focus on rescuing frozen teammates rather than dodging “It”
- Q (Quiet): Move at a walk; use the tortoise pose strategically to participate at lower intensity
- O (Observer): Watch from the boundary, track how many players are frozen at one time, join at the next role switch
Inclusion Adaptations
- Walking-only players are still valid rescuers and runners; full participation at reduced pace
- Tortoise pose can be modified to sitting down with hands raised for players who cannot get to the ground
Stewardship Moment
- Use reusable vests from camp stock; wash and return after play
- 60-second sweep of the play area after the game to collect any displaced cones
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves light shoulder touches for tagging and freezing. For those not comfortable with physical contact, there is a cone-tap version where “It” taps the ground cone near you instead of touching your shoulder.”
- Mid-game check: After 5 minutes, pause. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. How is everyone doing?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Step to the boundary at any time. Raise both hands to signal a break. Rejoin at any role switch.
Risks and Mitigation
- Collisions between runners: remind players to watch where they are going and slow down near frozen players
- Players staying in tortoise pose too long: counsellor calls “Tortoise time!” to signal the 10-second rule
- Falls when lying down on uneven ground: check the surface before play; modify pose to seated for rough terrain
- Staff should be aware of any campers with back or joint concerns; the tortoise pose modification (seated) is available for everyone
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Slow Tornado”: players walk in random directions changing direction on each whistle; builds spatial awareness
- “Freeze Dance”: music plays, players dance; music stops, everyone freezes; good practice for the freeze mechanic
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was your strategy: dodge, rescue, or tortoise? Did you change it during the game?”
- So What? “What happened when lots of people were frozen at once?”
- Now What? “When do you look out for someone who is stuck or needs a hand?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect cones and vests
- Return vests to equipment storage for washing
- Check the space for any hazards before the next group
