Name and Purpose
- Banana Push-Through is a silly, low-stakes laugh-together moment that builds group joy and shared silliness.
- Players practise letting go of self-consciousness in a safe, cheering crowd.
a.k.a.
- Pantyhose Push, Silly Face Challenge
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 6-30 players (2-4 active at a time, rest as audience) | 10-15 minutes | Indoor or covered outdoor space with a table or clear standing area
Materials
- Ripe bananas (1 per round per active player)
- Old pantyhose or stockings cut into single legs (1 per round per active player)
- Small cups (1 per active player)
- Napkins or wet wipes
- Optional: aprons or old T-shirts to protect clothing
Quick-Run Card
- Call for volunteers. Confirm they are comfortable before starting.
- Volunteers mash a banana in their mouth until it is soft and paste-like.
- Active players pull a pantyhose leg over their head.
- Players push the banana from their mouth through the mesh into the cup.
- Most banana in the cup at the 60-second mark wins the round.
Setup and Boundaries
- Set up a small table or clear standing area with cups and wipes ready.
- Signal: 1 whistle or raised hand = stop and remove the pantyhose immediately.
- Staff: 1 staff member per 2 active players; 1 staff managing the audience.
- Pantyhose must be pulled fully clear of the nose before starting. Confirm the player can breathe comfortably.
How to Play
- Ask for 2-4 volunteers per round. Do not pressure anyone. Volunteers must confirm they want to play before stepping up.
- Give each volunteer a banana. They chew and mash it until it is soft and paste-like.
- Each volunteer pulls a pantyhose leg down over their head (nose fully clear of mesh to allow breathing).
- On the signal, players push the banana from their mouth through the mesh into the cup in front of them.
- Audience cheers. After 60 seconds, count how much banana made it into the cup.
- Staff gently pull the pantyhose up and off. Players wipe their faces.
- Rotate to new volunteers for the next round.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Be an active push-through participant.
- S (Support): Be the most enthusiastic part of the cheering crowd; count banana into the cup.
- Q (Quiet): Watch from a comfortable distance; smile and enjoy.
- O (Observer): Choose not to participate actively; be the official timer or scorekeeper.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players with sensory sensitivities around face coverings or food textures can cheer, score, or manage the equipment.
- Any player who becomes uncomfortable mid-round can raise a hand and staff will remove the pantyhose immediately.
Stewardship Moment
- Compost banana peels and food waste after the activity.
- Pantyhose can be washed and reused if not torn.
- Reflection: “What was it like to be silly in front of a group? How did the audience support make it easier?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This one involves covering your face with a stocking and pushing banana through it. It is safe but silly and messy. For those not comfortable with face coverings or food textures, cheering and scoring are equally great roles.”
- Staff must confirm volunteers are willing before pulling pantyhose over heads. Ask each player privately: “Are you ready to go?”
- Mid-game check: Watch each active player for signs of discomfort. Staff must be ready to remove pantyhose immediately on any signal.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Raise one hand to stop at any time. Re-join as audience for the current round or as a volunteer for the next.
Risks and Mitigation
- Restricted breathing: pantyhose must not cover the nose. Check fit before starting.
- Banana allergy: staff should be aware of any relevant food sensitivities in the group.
- Mess on clothing: offer aprons or old T-shirts; place a mat or towel under the play area.
- Player distress under face covering: assign one staff member to watch each active player’s face throughout.
