Name and Purpose
- Blue Sky Sorter is a quick and joyful team-splitting tool that uses random chance to divide groups fairly.
- Players practise quick decision-making and light movement while getting set for the next activity.
a.k.a.
- None (no alternate names needed for this activity)
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-60 players | 3-5 minutes | Any open space, indoor or outdoor
Materials
- No materials required
- Optional: coloured bibs or pinnies to mark teams once sorted
Quick-Run Card
- Players stand spread out in the open space.
- Staff call the phrase: “Green fields, red earth, blue sky. Go!”
- Everyone holds up any number of fingers from 1 to 10.
- Even-number holders move to one side. Odd-number holders move to the other.
- Adjust for balance if needed, then move into the next activity.
Setup and Boundaries
- No setup required.
- Signal: staff raised hand = everyone freezes and listens.
- If the group size is uneven after sorting, invite 1-2 players to switch voluntarily.
How to Play
- Ask players to stand in an open area with room to move.
- Explain: “I am going to call a phrase. When I say Go, hold up any number of fingers from 1 to 10. Do not overthink it.”
- Call: “Green fields, red earth, blue sky. Go!”
- Players hold up their fingers. Even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8, 10) form one team; odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) form the other.
- Teams move to their designated sides.
- If teams are uneven, ask for volunteers to switch, or run the phrase again for the extra players.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Jump to your team side as soon as the split is called.
- S (Support): Help count fingers and guide players to the right side.
- Q (Quiet): Walk calmly to your side; no rushing needed.
- O (Observer): Watch the sort from the side; join the team of your choice if the activity allows it.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who cannot hold up fingers can call out a number verbally or show a number card.
- Players can join whichever team they prefer if a strict split is not needed.
Stewardship Moment
- No materials means no waste. Zero cleanup.
- This activity leaves the space exactly as it was found.
Consent
- Pre-brief: “We are going to split into two teams using a fun random method. If you end up separated from your friend, that is okay. For those who need to be paired with a specific person for any reason, let me know quietly and we will sort it out.”
- No mid-game check needed for a 3-minute transition activity.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players who are not comfortable with the random split can be placed by staff without drawing attention.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players rushing to one side causing collisions: remind players to walk to their team side.
- Uneven teams: have a backup method ready (count off by 1s and 2s) if Blue Sky consistently produces imbalanced groups.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- This activity is itself a warm-up or transition. No additional warm-up needed.
Debrief Questions
- Not applicable for a transition/sorting activity.
- If used as a teaching moment: What? “Was this fair? Why or why not?” So What? “What does random chance feel like?” Now What? “How do you feel about your team?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Nothing to clean up.
- Move directly into the next activity.
