Name and Purpose
- Bola Jump builds timing, focus, and cooperative play around a simple spinning rope challenge.
- Players practise jumping coordination, spatial awareness, and taking turns as spinner.
a.k.a.
- None (Bola is the established name; no alternate names needed)
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 6-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Large flat outdoor area or gymnasium with a 6-metre radius of clear space
Materials
- 1 long jump rope (minimum 5 metres)
- 1 rubber softball
- 1 long sock or fabric bag to hold the ball (tied securely to the end of the rope)
- Cones to mark the safe perimeter
Quick-Run Card
- Mark a safe perimeter with cones (minimum 6-metre radius from the centre).
- Spinner lies on their back at the centre, holding the rope end with the ball in a sock.
- Spinner rotates the rope steadily at a low, even height.
- Players around the edge jump the rope as it passes their feet.
- Rotate the spinner every 2-3 minutes. Try the standing variation once players are comfortable.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark the outer boundary clearly with cones. Players must stay outside the marked circle until it is their turn as spinner.
- No one enters the spinning zone except the spinner.
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause spinning; 2 whistles = stop and gather.
- Check the ground for debris, wet patches, or uneven surfaces before play.
- Confirm the ball is secured firmly in the sock before each spin. Check the rope knot.
How to Play
- One player (or a staff member for the first round) becomes the spinner. Spinner lies on their back at the centre.
- Spinner holds the rope and rotates it in a wide, steady circle at ankle height.
- All other players stand around the perimeter and jump the rope as it passes their feet.
- Players who are hit by the rope move to the sideline, do 5 star jumps, and re-enter immediately.
- After 2-3 minutes, call a rotation: the spinner joins the perimeter and a new player volunteers as spinner.
- Optional: once players are comfortable, the spinner can try sitting up or standing to increase the challenge.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Jump at the perimeter; volunteer as spinner.
- S (Support): Cheer players on; count consecutive successful jumps.
- Q (Quiet): Jump at a slower pace near a less-active part of the perimeter.
- O (Observer): Watch from safely outside the cone boundary; choose when to join.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who cannot jump can participate as the spinner (lying-down version) or as the official counter and cheerleader.
- Rope speed can be adjusted to a very slow rotation for players who need more time to respond.
Stewardship Moment
- All equipment is reusable. Store rope and ball together after play.
- Reflection: “How did the group work together to keep the rope going smoothly?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game has a spinning rope near your feet. For those not comfortable jumping over it, the spinner or counter role is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After the first rotation, quick thumbs up/sideways/down from the group.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Step outside the cone boundary at any time. Re-enter at the next rotation.
Risks and Mitigation
- Ball striking a player at speed: keep spin speed moderate; staff demonstrate the correct speed before play begins.
- Rope becoming tangled around a player’s feet: clear the rope immediately; no yanking.
- Spinner dizziness: lying-down spinning is lower risk; limit spinning to 2-3 minutes per player; stop if any dizziness reported.
- Rope knot failing mid-spin: check knot security before every spinner rotation.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Jump In Place”: everyone jumps on the spot 10 times to warm up ankles and calves.
- “Slow-Motion Skip”: players practise the jumping motion without the rope to get the timing right.
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was the hardest part of timing your jump?”
- So What? “How did watching the rope help you get ready?”
- Now What? “Where else do you have to read what is coming and time your response?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect rope and ball-in-sock.
- Untie and store rope and ball separately or together in a bag.
- Remove cones and check the area for dropped items.
