Name and Purpose
- Squeeze and Grab is a fast-thinking team game that builds focus, communication, and reaction speed.
- Players practise staying present, passing a signal accurately, and working as a connected chain.
a.k.a.
- Electric Squeeze; Chain Reaction; Signal Pass
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-30 players (even teams) | 15-25 minutes | Indoors or outdoors; two parallel lines
Materials
- 1 soft object: foam ball, beanbag, or stuffed toy
- 1 coin for flipping
- Flat, open ground or a clear indoor space
Quick-Run Card
- Divide into two equal teams. Each team lines up side by side, holding hands.
- Both teams face each other. Place the soft object at the far end between the two last players.
- Only the line leaders (first players) watch the coin flip. Everyone else closes their eyes.
- Heads: line leaders squeeze the next person’s hand. The squeeze travels down the line to the last player.
- Last player grabs the object first scores a point for their team. After each round, the last player moves to the front.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark the two line positions clearly with cones or tape
- Place the soft object at the centre of the far end, equidistant from both last players
- Signal: counsellor raises a hand = pause; 2 claps = reset for next round
- Check the floor for trip hazards before play
How to Play
- Divide players into two equal teams. Teams sit or stand in parallel lines, holding hands with the person next to them.
- Both lines face the same direction so the line leaders can see the coin flip.
- All players except the two line leaders close their eyes.
- The coin is flipped. Heads: line leaders squeeze the next person’s hand immediately. The squeeze travels down the chain. Tails: no squeeze. If a player grabs the object on a tails flip, the other team scores a point.
- The last player who receives the squeeze grabs the object first scores a point for their team.
- After each round, the last player rotates to the front of the line. Everyone shifts down one position.
- Play continues until all players have held the line-leader position. Team with the most points wins.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Hold a line position and pass the squeeze
- S (Support): Serve as the coin flipper or score tracker
- Q (Quiet): Sit in the middle of the line where the signal is simply passed along without pressure to react quickly
- O (Observer): Watch a round from the side; count how fast the squeeze travels down the line; join the next round
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who cannot hold hands may pass the signal by placing a hand on the next person’s shoulder or forearm
- The soft object can be replaced with a larger, easier-to-grab item for players with limited grip
- Line leaders who cannot see the coin flip clearly can be told the result quietly by the counsellor
Stewardship Moment
- The only material is a coin and one soft object; no setup waste
- Reflection: “This game works because everyone passes the signal carefully. What happens when one link in the chain loses focus?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves holding hands in a chain. For those not comfortable holding hands, placing a hand on the next person’s shoulder or forearm is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After 2 rounds, pause. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. How is the hand-holding feeling?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players may step out of the line and take the score-tracking role at any time. Call “In!” to rejoin at the front of the line for the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- False squeezes passed on tails flip (nervous reactions): remind players to wait and only pass a clear, deliberate squeeze
- End player lunge causing a fall: the soft object should be picked up calmly, not dived for; counsellor sets the tone in the first round
- Uneven team sizes: one team has a volunteer counsellor or a rotating observer to balance
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Pulse Pass”: standing in a circle, pass a gentle hand squeeze around as fast as possible; time it
- “Eyes Closed Walk”: players walk 5 steps with eyes closed, then open. Builds comfort with the eyes-closed mechanic.
Debrief Questions
- What? “How many rounds did it take before your team squeezed smoothly all the way down the line?”
- So What? “What made it hard to pass the signal accurately? What helped?”
- Now What? “Can you think of a time when you had to pass important information quickly and accurately to someone else?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect the soft object and coin
- Return any cones to storage
- Check the floor for any items left on the ground
