Name and Purpose
- Flashlight Limbo takes the classic limbo game into the dark, adding a fun sensory twist with light instead of a physical bar.
- Players build body awareness, balance, and coordination in a low-stakes, playful setting.
a.k.a.
- Light Beam Limbo; Dark Room Limbo
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 6-20 players | 10-20 minutes | Indoors; a room that can be fully darkened with a clear, safe floor
Materials
- 1 flashlight (torch) with fresh or charged batteries
- Optional: a second flashlight for backup lighting during transitions
- A room with the ability to black out all light (curtains, closed blinds)
- A cleared floor with no furniture or obstacles in the limbo path
Quick-Run Card
- Clear the room of obstacles and close all light sources.
- One staff member holds the flashlight horizontally at the starting height.
- Players line up and take turns leaning back and passing under the beam without touching it.
- After each full rotation, lower the beam by one hand-width.
- Celebrate every attempt; no elimination. Players who touch the beam stay in and try the next height.
Setup and Boundaries
- Clear the room completely before lights go out; do a full sweep in the light first
- Identify the limbo path clearly before darkening the room; place glow dots or tape on the floor to mark the lane
- Signal: counsellor calls “Pause!” clearly (no whistle in the dark, which can startle); lights-on signal is two hand claps
- A second staff member stands at the back of the line with a low backup light for safety
- Staff should be aware of any players with sensitivities to darkness or enclosed spaces.
How to Play
- Do the room setup and safety sweep in full light. Players walk the limbo path once in the light before it goes dark.
- Turn off the lights. Staff member holds the flashlight horizontally at the start height (roughly shoulder level for the youngest player).
- Players line up in single file. One at a time, each player leans back and walks under the beam without being struck by the light.
- If the beam touches the player, they get a “glow moment” (staff says “glow!”) and stay in the game. No elimination.
- After all players complete a pass, the beam is lowered by one hand-width.
- Continue lowering until the beam is at a height that creates a real challenge. Celebrate the smallest successful duck.
- Variation: players can choose to go under the beam with a silly walk, a spin, or a partner hold.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Take a full turn in the limbo rotation at every height
- S (Support): Hold a second low-level backup flashlight for safety; cheer for each attempt
- Q (Quiet): Participate in lower-intensity rounds only (higher beam heights); skip the lowest heights if balance is a concern
- O (Observer): Sit at the edge of the room; watch the silhouettes; join when ready
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who are not comfortable in full darkness can hold a small glow stick while they wait in line
- Limbo can be done from a seated position on a low rolling chair for players with balance or mobility considerations
- Beam height never goes below knee level; keep the challenge achievable
Stewardship Moment
- Rechargeable batteries for the flashlight reduce waste; have the counsellor recharge between sessions
- Reflection: “What changed about how you moved when you could not see the full room? What did your body do differently?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “Flashlight Limbo happens in a dark room with one light beam as the bar. For those not comfortable in full darkness, a glow stick to hold while waiting in line is another option. You can also help run the backup light or cheer from the edge.”
- Mid-game check: After the first rotation, ask: “Is the darkness level okay? Do we need a little more background light?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players may step out of the line at any time and rejoin at the back of the queue for the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Tripping or falling in the dark: complete floor sweep in full light before starting; glow tape on the floor marks the path
- Players startled by sudden darkness: dim the lights gradually rather than cutting them all at once
- Balance difficulty during back bend: remind players to go only as low as feels stable; no pressure to match the beam height
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Balance Hold”: players stand on one foot for 10 seconds, then switch; builds the balance needed for the back-bend
- “Walk the Line”: in full light, players walk a tape line on the floor heel-to-toe to warm up balance
Debrief Questions
- What? “What height was the hardest? What did you do to get lower?”
- So What? “How did it feel to do something familiar (limbo) in an unfamiliar way (in the dark)?”
- Now What? “When in life do you have to adapt a skill to a new or unexpected situation?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Turn lights back on before cleanup begins
- Return furniture to original position
- Recharge or replace flashlight batteries
- Roll up glow tape or collect floor markers
