Name and Purpose
- Sleeping Bag Shuffle brings cabin energy and laughter while building quick reaction and spatial awareness.
- A classic music-and-movement game adapted to a camp sleeping environment, with no one left sitting out.
a.k.a.
- Musical Mats, Pillow Scramble
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-24 players | 10-15 minutes | Indoor cabin or large room with clear floor space
Materials
- Sleeping bags laid flat (one fewer than number of players)
- Music source (phone and portable speaker, or a counsellor who hums or claps a rhythm)
- Cones or tape strips to mark clear boundaries of the play circle
Quick-Run Card
- Lay sleeping bags flat in a circle; remove one bag from the total.
- Start music. Players walk (not run) in a circle over the bags.
- When music stops, everyone scrambles to get inside a bag.
- The player without a bag heads to the Sideline Zone and completes a fun challenge (3 silly poses, a tongue twister, a quick balance task).
- After completing the challenge, they re-enter the circle for the next round.
Setup and Boundaries
- Lay sleeping bags flat with small gaps between them — enough space to climb in safely
- Mark the circle boundary with cones or tape
- Signal: music stop = freeze; counsellor raised hand = full pause and gather
- Check floor for tripping hazards, loose laces, or slippery surfaces before play
How to Play
- Arrange sleeping bags in a circle on the floor, one fewer than the number of players.
- Players walk in a circle around the outside of the bags while music plays.
- When the music stops, each player climbs into the nearest sleeping bag. One player per bag.
- The player without a bag goes to the Sideline Zone. They complete a quick fun challenge (see below), then return to the circle for the next round. No bag is removed.
- Repeat for as many rounds as the group enjoys. Celebrate quick reactions and good humour.
Sideline Zone Challenges (choose one per round)
- Strike 3 dramatic poses in 10 seconds
- Say a tongue twister three times fast
- Spin in place 5 times, then walk a straight line
- Lead the group in a 10-second clap rhythm
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Walk and scramble for a bag each round
- S (Support): Be the music controller — start and stop the sound
- Q (Quiet): Walk slowly at the back of the circle, no rushing required
- O (Observer): Watch from outside the circle; join when ready by signalling the leader
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who use mobility aids or move at a slower pace: place their starting spot closest to a bag each round
- Sleeping bags can be replaced with large fabric squares or hula hoops for easier entry and exit
Stewardship Moment
- Sleeping bags are reused and returned neatly — no disposable materials needed
- Reflection: “What do we use at camp that we can take care of and use again and again?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “We’ll be scrambling into sleeping bags when the music stops. For those not comfortable with tight spaces or fast movement, there’s a walking-only version where you tag the bag instead of climbing in — just let me know.”
- Mid-game check: After round 2, quick thumbs check. Adjust energy level or pacing if needed.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can step to the sideline at any time and rejoin the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Tripping while rushing to a bag: remind players to walk, not sprint; demonstrate safe bag entry
- Crowding or collisions at one bag: remind players to head to the nearest bag, not the same one
- Player in the Sideline Zone feeling isolated: keep challenges fun and brief; counsellor narrates them positively (“Look at that pose!”)
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Freeze Walk”: everyone walks around the room freely; when music stops, freeze in whatever position they’re in
- “Bag Roll”: players each stand on their sleeping bag and practise rolling it up and unrolling it quickly
Debrief Questions
- What? “What happened when the music stopped? What did you notice about how everyone moved?”
- So What? “How did it feel to not get a bag? What made the challenge at the sideline more fun than just waiting?”
- Now What? “When do you have to think and move fast in real life? How do you stay calm when things change quickly?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Roll sleeping bags and return to bunks or storage
- Remove cones or tape markers
- 60-second floor check
