Name and Purpose
- Red Robin Run builds listening skills and quick reactions in a simple, energetic chase format.
- The guessing element adds a fun mental layer to a classic running game, and anyone can win on any round.
a.k.a.
- Around the House, Back-to-Start
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Outdoor area around a building or a clearly marked loop; can be adapted for an indoor loop around a hall or gym
Materials
- Cones or chalk to mark the start/finish line (if no natural marker exists)
- Optional: printed or handwritten category cards to inspire Red Robin’s choices
- Flat, safe running surface with no trip hazards
Quick-Run Card
- Mark a clear start/finish line in front of the group.
- One player is Red Robin and faces the group.
- Red Robin names a category and players take turns calling out guesses.
- Red Robin calls the name of whoever guesses correctly.
- Red Robin and the correct guesser run in opposite directions around the loop. First one back becomes the new Red Robin.
Setup and Boundaries
- Walk the loop with the group before play to identify any hazards (roots, uneven ground, puddles)
- Mark the start/finish line clearly with cones, chalk, or a natural marker (tree, post)
- Signal: raised hand = pause the round; two whistles = everyone return to start
- Check running surface for wet leaves, mud, or loose gravel before starting
How to Play
- Players stand in a group facing Red Robin at the start/finish line.
- Red Robin announces: “I’m thinking of a type of [category].” (e.g., shoe, car, fruit, animal, movie character)
- Players call out guesses one at a time. No shouting over each other — the counsellor can moderate if needed.
- Red Robin calls the name of the player whose guess is correct.
- Red Robin and that player immediately take off in opposite directions around the loop.
- The first one back to the start line becomes the new Red Robin.
- If both arrive at the same time, Red Robin stays for one more round.
- Rounds where no one guesses correctly: Red Robin gives a hint and the round continues.
Note on the original game’s “Red Devil” rule: The original description included an alternative where the last person back becomes the “Red Devil.” This name and its negative association has been removed. The revised version simply uses the “first one back” format throughout.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Guess and run each round
- S (Support): Keep track of whose turn it is to guess or help moderate the guessing order
- Q (Quiet): Listen and guess without running; wave to pass on the running challenge this round
- O (Observer): Watch rounds and join when ready; signal the leader with a thumbs-up to be included in the next guessing pool
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who do not wish to run can be the “Caller” — they make the category announcement on behalf of Red Robin while Red Robin runs with a different partner
- The loop distance can be shortened for younger or less physically active groups; mark a shorter route with cones
Stewardship Moment
- All materials (cones, chalk) pack up in under a minute — leave the space exactly as found
- Reflection: “We used the space around us for a game without changing it. What does it mean to play somewhere and leave no trace?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves running around a loop. For those not comfortable running the full distance, there’s a walk-the-loop option or a staying-as-Caller role — just let me know before or during play.”
- Mid-game check: After 3-4 rounds, pause for a quick thumbs check. Adjust the loop length or pacing as needed.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can wave to pass on their running turn. Signal the leader to rejoin the guessing pool at any time.
Risks and Mitigation
- Running around blind corners (side of a building): walk the route first; set a “slow zone” rule at corners
- Collision when both runners come back to the start from opposite directions: mark a wide finish zone (3m) so both players have room
- Overheating or fatigue: keep rounds short; offer water breaks every 5-7 rounds
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Walk the route together as a group before starting — helps everyone know the path
- “Category Warm-Up”: stand in a circle and go around quickly naming items in a category (e.g., everyone names a fruit in 5 seconds or less)
Debrief Questions
- What? “What categories were hardest to guess? What made some easier?”
- So What? “What does it feel like when you guess correctly and then have to react quickly?”
- Now What? “Where in life do you have to switch quickly from thinking to doing?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect cones or wipe chalk marks
- 60-second sweep of the run route for any litter or hazards
