Name and Purpose
- Shoe Scramble is a fast-paced, laugh-filled game that gets everyone moving together.
- Players practise quick decision-making and fine motor skills while sharing a fun shared challenge.
a.k.a.
- Shoe Rush, Shoe Pile Race
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Gym floor, paved court, or flat outdoor area
Materials
- Participants’ own shoes (one pair each)
- 4 cones or chalk lines to mark start line and pile zone
- Flat, even surface (avoid wet or slippery ground)
Quick-Run Card
- Everyone places shoes in the central pile.
- Staff mix up the pile so no matching pairs are together.
- Players line up behind the start line.
- On the go signal, all players race to find their shoes, put them on, and return.
- Celebrate together when everyone is back at the line.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark a start line and a pile zone with cones or chalk
- Keep at least 3 metres between the start line and the pile
- Signal: one short whistle = go; two short whistles = stop and gather
- Check the surface for wet patches, loose gravel, or debris before play
How to Play
- All players remove their shoes and walk them to the pile zone.
- Staff mix up the pile so no matching pairs are side by side.
- Players return to the start line and wait for the go signal.
- On the go signal, everyone moves to the pile, finds both of their shoes, puts them on (laced or fastened), and returns to the start line.
- Players who finish early cheer for those still going.
- The round ends when everyone is back at the start line with shoes on.
- Optional second round: try to beat the group’s previous time as a team challenge.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Sprint to the pile, find your shoes, race back to the line
- S (Support): Help a teammate spot their shoes or cheer loudly from the line
- Q (Quiet): Walk the course at your own pace, focus on finding shoes calmly
- O (Observer): Watch from the side, track the group’s time, join the next round when ready
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players with mobility needs may have their shoes set aside separately so they can participate without accessing the pile
- Velcro or slip-on shoes work equally well; no advantage given to lace-up speed
Stewardship Moment
- After play, do a quick 30-second scan to make sure no shoes or belongings are left behind
- Reflection: “How did the group work together even in a race?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This is a moving game where you’ll be finding your own shoes in a pile. For those not comfortable with the rush, walking the course or helping from the sideline are great ways to take part.”
- Mid-game check: After the first round, pause. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. Want to go again?”
- Opt-out / re-entry: Players can step to the side at any point. Call “In!” to join the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Collision at the pile: remind players to approach from their own angle and move calmly once at the pile
- Trips while putting on shoes: players may sit down to put shoes on rather than balancing on one foot
- Sock-only running on slippery floors: if indoors on a smooth surface, walk (do not run) between the line and the pile
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Shoe Sorting”: in pairs, sort a small set of shoes by type in under 30 seconds
- “Freeze Walk”: players walk freely; on whistle, freeze instantly and hold still
Debrief Questions
- What? “What made finding your shoes harder than you expected?”
- So What? “How did it feel when others cheered for you?”
- Now What? “What’s a real-life situation where staying calm in a rush matters?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Players carry their own shoes back to their area
- Staff check the pile zone for any unclaimed items
