Name and Purpose
- Palm Pass is a quick, playful reaction game that needs no equipment and works in almost any space.
- Players build reaction speed and focus while sharing lots of laughter in a close-knit circle.
a.k.a.
- Slap Happy Circle, Palm Circle
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 5-20 players | 10-15 minutes | Small circle space indoors or outdoors; no setup required
Materials
- No materials required
- Optional: a small soft foam pad placed between hands for a gentler tap variation
Quick-Run Card
- Stand in a circle. Each player has one hand palm-up and one hand palm-down.
- Palm-up hands rest under the adjacent palm-down hands.
- On signal, palm-down hands try to tap the palm-up hand beside them.
- Palm-up hands try to pull away before the tap lands.
- A missed tap means that hand flips to palm-up.
Setup and Boundaries
- Players stand close enough that hands can overlap comfortably (roughly arm’s length apart)
- No boundaries needed beyond the circle itself
- Signal: staff calls “Ready, set, play!” to begin each round
- Check for rings, bracelets, or sharp accessories and ask players to remove or cover them before play
How to Play
- Players stand in a circle. Each person places their right hand palm-up under the left (palm-down) hand of the person to their right.
- Staff model the position slowly before play begins.
- On the start signal, each player with a palm-down hand tries to quickly tap the palm-up hand next to them.
- Players with palm-up hands try to pull their hand away before the tap lands.
- If a palm-down hand misses, it flips to palm-up. If a palm-up hand is tapped, it flips to palm-down.
- Play continues in a lively, flowing rhythm. No elimination; players just keep switching hand positions.
- After a few minutes, pause and shake hands out, then start a new round.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Play at full speed, focusing on quick taps and fast pulls
- S (Support): Model the hand position for new players, help the group set the starting rhythm
- Q (Quiet): Play at half-speed, focusing on accuracy rather than reaction time
- O (Observer): Watch a round before joining, then step in when ready
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who prefer minimal hand contact may use a foam pad between palms, tapping the pad instead of skin
- Players with limited hand mobility can play using a gentle wrist tap instead of a palm tap
Stewardship Moment
- No materials means no cleanup. Take a moment to appreciate how much fun is possible with just people.
- Reflection: “What did this game need to work well?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves light hand contact with the people beside you. For those not comfortable with that, watching a round first or using a foam pad between hands are both great options.”
- Mid-game check: After the first round, pause. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. How is everyone doing?”
- Opt-out / re-entry: Any player can take a step back to observe. Step back in when ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- Rings or jewellery causing scratches: ask players to remove or cover them before play
- Overly hard slaps: model and reinforce gentle taps; staff narrate “light touch” during play
- Confusion about hand positions: staff model slowly first, and walk around the circle to check positions before starting
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Mirror Hands”: in pairs, mirror each other’s slow hand movements for 30 seconds
- “Quick Clap”: group claps on the beat of a simple rhythm called out by staff
Debrief Questions
- What? “What did you have to pay attention to during this game?”
- So What? “How did your reaction time change as you got more practice?”
- Now What? “When else do you need to react quickly and stay calm at the same time?”
Cleanup and Reset
- No materials to collect
- Players shake out their hands and the circle naturally disperses
