Name and Purpose
- Take It Back is a high-energy team game built on movement, coordination, and shared laughter.
- Players practise throwing, spatial awareness, and working together under cheerful pressure.
a.k.a.
- Side Switch, Sock Scramble
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-40 players | 10-20 minutes | Large field or gym, minimum 15m x 10m
Materials
- 10-30 sock balls or soft foam balls
- 4-8 cones (boundary markers and centre line)
- Optional: 1 mesh bag per side for collecting extras
Quick-Run Card
- Mark boundaries and a centre line with cones.
- Place all balls on the centre line.
- On the whistle, both teams throw balls to the other side.
- On the stop whistle, everyone freezes. Count balls on your side. Fewer is better.
- Celebrate, reset, and play again.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark a clear rectangle with cones, centre line divides two sides
- Signal: 1 short whistle = go; 2 short whistles = freeze and count
- Check ground for hazards before play
- No throwing above shoulder height
How to Play
- Split into two roughly equal teams. Each team starts on their side of the centre line.
- All balls begin on the centre line.
- On the go signal, players run to grab or retrieve balls and throw them across to the other side.
- Players may not cross the centre line.
- When the stop whistle blows, everyone freezes immediately.
- Count the balls on each side. The team with fewer balls on their side wins the round.
- Reset and repeat. Three rounds make a full game.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Run, retrieve, and throw balls across the line
- S (Support): Stay in your zone and redirect balls coming your way, cheer for teammates
- Q (Quiet): Walk-pace retrieval only, focus on the counting or organising role
- O (Observer): Watch from the side, count balls for your team, decide when to join
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who use wheelchairs or have limited mobility can play from a fixed spot and have balls rolled or passed to them
- Reduce field size for smaller groups or players who need a more compact space
Stewardship Moment
- All sock balls and foam balls are reusable. After play, collect every ball and return them to the bag.
- Prompt: “How did we use this space? What can we do to leave it exactly as we found it?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves quick movement and some gentle throwing. For those not comfortable with running or throwing, standing in your zone and redirecting or counting is a great role too.”
- Mid-game check: At the halfway point, pause and give a thumbs up, sideways, or down signal. Adjust pace or zone size if needed.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Step to the sideline at any time. Call “in!” to rejoin your team’s zone on the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Collision at the centre line: remind players to stay on their own side and not reach over
- Overhand throws hitting faces: enforce no throwing above shoulder height from the start
- Slipping on balls: keep a clear retrieval path and remind players to watch their footing
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Toss and Catch Pairs”: partners toss a sock ball back and forth, gradually stepping further apart
- “Freeze Throw”: players walk around, tossing a ball to themselves; freeze on whistle
Debrief Questions
- What? “What strategy did your team use to get balls off your side?”
- So What? “Did working together change the result? What helped or got in the way?”
- Now What? “Where else do you need to act fast AND work with others at the same time?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Both teams collect all balls and return them to the central bag
- Remove cones and stack them
- Quick scan of the play area for any missed equipment
