Name and Purpose
- Shoe Rocket is a high-energy parachute launch game that gets the whole group working in unison.
- Players build timing, coordination, and shared effort while enjoying the spectacle together.
a.k.a.
- Shoe Launch, Flying Footwear
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 10-16 | 10-30 players | 10-15 minutes | Large open outdoor space with clear overhead area and wide surrounding clearance for landing shoes
Materials
- One large parachute
- One lightweight non-heavy shoe per player (Crocs, flip-flops, or similar)
- Hats or caps for all players (to protect from falling shoes)
Quick-Run Card
- All players put on a hat before shoes go on the parachute.
- Everyone places one lightweight shoe on the parachute centre.
- All players circle up, hold the edge, and step back to pull it taut.
- Lift slowly together three times, counting aloud.
- On the fourth lift, pull up as hard as possible then snap down. Shoes launch!
Setup and Boundaries
- Use only outdoors. Clear a large surrounding area of at least 10 metres in all directions.
- All players wear hats before play begins. Non-negotiable.
- Signal: one short whistle to pause; two to stop and gather.
- Staff check that no players are standing outside the circle in the landing zone.
How to Play
- All players put on a hat or cap.
- Each player places one lightweight shoe (Crocs, flip-flops, or similar) in the centre of the parachute.
- Everyone grabs the edge of the parachute and steps back to pull it taut.
- Staff lead a slow practice lift: ‘Up two three, down two three.’ Repeat three times to build rhythm.
- On the staff cue, lift as fast and high as possible, then snap the edge down hard.
- Shoes launch into the air. Everyone watches, then collects their own shoe from the ground.
- Repeat as many rounds as the group enjoys. Try for height, distance, or team coordination.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Pull hard on the edge and celebrate the launch.
- S (Support): Help count aloud and keep the group in rhythm.
- Q (Quiet): Hold and lift at a comfortable intensity.
- O (Observer): Watch the launch from a safe distance outside the landing zone; join holding the edge for the next round.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who cannot lift strongly can contribute by holding and helping count the rhythm.
- Players who prefer not to lose track of their shoe can tie a small ribbon to it for easy identification.
Stewardship Moment
- Each player collects their own shoe after each round, keeping the play space tidy.
- Reflection: ‘What happened when everyone pulled at the same moment? What changed when the timing was off?’
Consent
- Pre-brief: ‘This game launches shoes into the air. Hats are required for safety. For those not comfortable with the full launch, holding the edge and helping count is equally important.’
- Mid-game check: After the first launch, pause and ask for a thumbs up, sideways, or down.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players can step back from the edge at any time. They can rejoin by picking up the edge before the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Falling shoes hitting players: all players wear hats; no one stands in the landing zone during launch.
- Heavy shoes causing injury on landing: use only lightweight footwear (Crocs, flip-flops). No sneakers, boots, or sandals with buckles.
- Players pulling unevenly and snapping others off balance: staff remind the group to lift together and keep grip firm.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Rhythm clap: group practices a four-count clap together before touching the parachute.
- Slow lift practice: one dry run at half speed before the full launch.
Debrief Questions
- What? ‘What made the shoes go higher? What made them go lower?’
- So What? ‘What does it feel like when a whole group is perfectly in sync?’
- Now What? ‘Where else in your day does timing and coordination matter?’
Cleanup and Reset
- All players collect their own shoes.
- Fold parachute together.
- Check landing zone for any items left behind.
