Name and Purpose
- Back-Words Word Builder stretches vocabulary, spelling, and lateral thinking in a fast team challenge.
- Teams learn to collaborate under a shared creative constraint.
a.k.a.
- Reverse Relay, Word Ladder Reverse
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-40 players (teams of 5) | 15-20 minutes | Indoors or at tables outdoors
Materials
- 1 sheet of paper per team per round
- 1 pencil or pen per team member
- Optional: whiteboard and markers per team
- Word prompt list prepared by leader (4-8 letter words, difficulty scaled to age)
Quick-Run Card
- Teams of 5 with paper and pencil ready.
- Leader calls a 4+ letter word.
- Each team writes the word down the left margin, then the same word backwards down the right margin.
- Fill the space between matching letters with a connecting word.
- First team to complete and share their valid words earns that round.
Setup and Boundaries
- Teams sit or stand at tables or on flat ground
- Signal: one whistle = start; two whistles = share your answers
- Confirm teams know the word being used (write it on a board if possible)
How to Play
- Divide into teams of 5. Each team has paper and something to write with.
- Leader calls out (and ideally writes) a word of 4 or more letters.
- Each team writes the word vertically down the left side of their paper, one letter per row.
- On the right side of the same paper, they write the same word vertically in reverse order, one letter per row, so each row has one starting letter and one ending letter.
- Teams fill in words between the left and right letters. Each word must start with the left letter and end with the right letter.
- When a team finishes, they read their words aloud. The leader confirms valid entries.
- Celebrate all completed attempts. Award points for valid words, bonus points for the longest word on a line, and bonus points for any word that makes the table laugh.
- Play 3-5 rounds with different words.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Lead the writing; call out word ideas rapidly
- S (Support): Help teammates check spellings; read the letters aloud to help the group
- Q (Quiet): Think and suggest words to the scribe without leading; take the writing role if others prefer not to
- O (Observer): Listen to other teams’ word reveals; volunteer to be the judge for valid words
Inclusion Adaptations
- Teams can work verbally, with one person scribing for players who prefer not to write
- Younger or developing writers can be given a dictionary or word-finder card to look up options
Stewardship Moment
- Paper sheets can be collected and recycled after play.
- Reuse paper by writing on the back in future rounds, or use small whiteboards for a zero-waste version.
Consent
- Pre-brief: “We’re going to do a word challenge as a team. For those who find spelling tricky, being the idea-caller or the reader is just as valuable as being the writer.”
- Mid-game check: After round 1, ask teams: “Is the difficulty about right? Too easy, too hard?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can swap roles within their team at any point. No one has to write.
Risks and Mitigation
- Frustration if a team can’t complete a word: remind them any reasonable attempt counts, and partial points are available
- Spelling disagreements: appoint one player per team as the friendly “final call” for that round
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Word Ping-Pong”: each team calls out one word starting with the last letter of the previous word for 1 minute
- Quick vocabulary sprint: teams list as many 5-letter words as they can in 60 seconds
Debrief Questions
- What? “Which word gave your team the most trouble?”
- So What? “How did your team share the thinking and writing?”
- Now What? “What strategy would you use differently next round?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect or recycle paper
- Return pens and pencils
- Wipe whiteboards if used
