Name and Purpose
- Balloon Baseball puts a slow, silly spin on a classic sport, levelling the playing field for all skill levels.
- Players practise hitting, fielding, and teamwork while learning that unpredictability is part of the fun.
a.k.a.
- Balloon Ball, Puff Ball
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-30 players | 20-30 minutes | Large outdoor space or gym; flat, clear ground
Materials
- Balloons (pre-inflated, at least 2 backups per balloon in play)
- 4 base markers (cones or flat markers)
- Boundary cones or chalk line
Quick-Run Card
- Mark a baseball diamond. Divide into two teams.
- Each team chooses a pitcher for the round; pitcher pitches to their own team’s batter.
- Batter hits balloon with fist. Two pitches per batter.
- Fielding team blows the balloon to the ground before batter rounds all bases.
- Teams rotate after all batters bat; play a set number of innings.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark a diamond with 4 cones; adjust base distance for the group’s age and ability
- Set an outfield boundary line
- Signal: one short whistle = dead ball; two whistles = end of inning
- Check the space for holes, debris, or slippery patches before play
- Have backup balloons ready; replace burst balloons immediately
How to Play
- Divide into two equal teams. One team bats; one team fields.
- Each batting team designates one pitcher per inning. The pitcher pitches to their own team’s batters.
- Each batter gets two pitches to hit the balloon with their fist.
- If the balloon is hit, the batter runs the bases. The fielding team works together to blow the balloon down to the ground before the batter completes the run.
- A run scores if the batter rounds all bases before the fielding team grounds the balloon.
- After all batters have batted, teams switch roles. An “inning” is complete when both teams have batted.
- Agree on the number of innings before starting. Celebrate effort across both teams at the end.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Bat, run the bases, or lead the fielding line
- S (Support): Call encouragement to your team; manage the backup balloon supply
- Q (Quiet): Bat when your turn comes; field at a position that suits your movement level
- O (Observer): Track the score; call “fair” or “foul”; join the batting order when ready
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who use wheelchairs or have limited mobility can bat from a stationary position and have a running proxy from their team
- Base distances can be shortened for younger or less mobile players mid-game without stopping play
Stewardship Moment
- Balloons are a single-use item and a litter risk. Collect every burst balloon piece immediately; they can be hazardous to wildlife and small children.
- Reflection: “What would this game look like if we used a different kind of ball? What tradeoffs would we make?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “Balloon Baseball is like regular baseball but sillier and slower. Everyone gets to bat. For those not comfortable with the full run, walking the bases or having a proxy runner from your team is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After the first inning, pause. “Is the base distance working for everyone? Shall we adjust?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players can step out of the batting order for any round and step back in at the next available turn.
Risks and Mitigation
- Balloon bursting: always have backups inflated and ready; loud pops may startle younger players, give a heads-up before the game
- Collision at bases: remind runners and fielders to give each other space
- Competitive escalation: frame the fielding-by-blowing mechanic as the leveller; reinforce that unpredictability is part of the design
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Balloon Tap”: players each keep a balloon in the air using only open hands for 2 minutes
- “Balloon Name”: stand in a circle, tap balloon to another player while saying their name
Debrief Questions
- What? “What happened when the balloon went somewhere you didn’t expect?”
- So What? “How did working together help your fielding team?”
- Now What? “How does this kind of unpredictability show up in team situations outside of games?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all balloon pieces, including any that have burst
- Return base markers and cones to storage
- Bag all balloon scraps and dispose responsibly
