Name and Purpose
- Musical Pairs builds quick thinking, connection, and group energy in a lively indoor game.
- Players practise adapting to change and supporting a partner under gentle time pressure.
a.k.a.
- Partner Swap, Musical Chairs (Partner Version)
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 13-16 | 10-30 players | 15-20 minutes | Indoor room; chairs in pairs around perimeter, open walking space in centre
Materials
- Folding chairs: one pair of chairs per pair of players, minus one pair (so one pair is always “looking”)
- Music source (phone and speaker)
- Optional: team colour markers or bibs if running as a team points game
Quick-Run Card
- Arrange chairs in pairs around the room. Players pair up.
- Music starts; pairs walk around the room together however they like.
- Music stops; all pairs race to sit in a set of chairs.
- The pair without chairs sits out for that round and joins the sideline activity.
- Remove one pair of chairs; repeat. Last pair seated wins.
Setup and Boundaries
- Place chair pairs around the room with clear walking paths between them
- Signal: music stops = find a chair; one whistle = all stop and gather
- Check for trip hazards and clear the centre of the room fully
How to Play
- Players pair up. One pair of chairs exists for every pair of players, minus one pair, so one pair is always looking.
- Music plays. Pairs walk, dance, or move around the room together while the music is going. They must keep moving.
- When the music stops, every pair races to sit in a set of chairs. The pair without chairs completes a fun sideline activity (three star jumps, a quick handshake, a silly walk to the door and back) and then re-enters the next round.
- The MC may call “Mix Up!” at any point during the music. All players release their partner and find a new one before the music stops.
- After each round, remove one pair of chairs. The game continues until one pair remains.
- The last pair earns points for the group. Celebrate everyone who made it to the final rounds.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Move energetically with your partner; sprint to chairs when music stops
- S (Support): Guide a partner who needs steadying; help others find pairs during Mix Up
- Q (Quiet): Walk calmly with your partner; choose a chair position close to the walking path
- O (Observer): Manage the music; call Mix Up; cheer pairs through the sideline activity
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who use mobility aids can walk rather than run; chairs are accessible from any side
- Players who prefer same-gender pairing can make that choice quietly; staff pair groups in advance if helpful
Stewardship Moment
- Chairs are the only equipment. Fold and stack them neatly after play.
- No consumables, no waste.
Consent
- Pre-brief: “In this game everyone pairs up with someone to move around the room together. Pairs can be any combination. For those not comfortable with a specific partner, just let a staff member know quietly and we’ll sort it out without any fuss.”
- Mid-game check: Before the first Mix Up call: “During Mix Up you’ll find a new partner. For those who’d prefer to keep their current partner, that is absolutely fine.”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Raise a hand to sit out any round. Call “In!” to jump back in at any Mix Up or round start.
Risks and Mitigation
- Running and collision when music stops: set a firm no-running rule; walk briskly only
- Players feeling singled out when eliminated: Second Circle sideline activity keeps everyone engaged immediately
- Pair imbalance if odd number of players: one group of three is always allowed, or a staff member joins as needed
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Handshake Bingo”: players find three different partners and invent a unique handshake with each before the game begins
- “Pair Freeze”: pairs move together in any way they like; on “Freeze” they must be touching one shoulder each
Debrief Questions
- What? “What happened the first time the Mix Up call came?”
- So What? “What made it easy or hard to find a new partner quickly?”
- Now What? “When in real life do you need to adapt to a change in who you’re working with?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Fold and stack all chairs
- Clear the room centre of any moved furniture
