Name and Purpose
- Mystery Bag Guess is a cosy, low-key guessing game that builds observation skills and group familiarity.
- Players practise attention to detail and social awareness in a calm, fun setting.
a.k.a.
- (None; no common alternate names)
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 6-20 players | 15-25 minutes | Indoor space; cabin, bunk room, or large floor area
Materials
- One sleeping bag per player (or a large blanket per player as an alternative for players who prefer not to use a shared bag)
- Whistle or hand signal for transitions
Quick-Run Card
- Lay all sleeping bags out on the floor in a row or scattered layout.
- One Guesser waits outside or turns away while others switch bags.
- Players each climb into a sleeping bag that is not their own.
- Guesser returns and tries to name who is in each bag.
- Everyone reveals themselves; a new Guesser is chosen.
Setup and Boundaries
- Lay bags flat with enough space between them for easy movement
- Signal: 1 tap on the door = Guesser may re-enter
- Ensure the floor is clear of tripping hazards before bags are laid out
- Players should feel comfortable in the bag; no one is required to zip up fully
How to Play
- Lay all sleeping bags flat on the floor in the play area.
- One player is chosen as the Guesser and steps outside or faces the wall with eyes closed.
- The rest of the group each slides into a bag that is not their own. Players may leave their shoes out, pull the bag over their head, or position themselves however they like.
- When everyone is settled, the leader signals the Guesser to return.
- The Guesser walks along the row and names who they think is in each bag, aloud.
- After all guesses, everyone reveals themselves. Celebrate close calls and surprises.
- Choose a new Guesser and repeat. Each player gets a turn as Guesser if time allows.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Fully hide in the bag, including pulling it over your head, to make it harder
- S (Support): Give the Guesser one helpful (but not too obvious) hint per round as the Bag Keeper
- Q (Quiet): Slide in feet-first and stay still; low movement, relaxed participation
- O (Observer): Stay outside the bag and act as round timer or clue monitor
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players not comfortable fully inside a bag may sit beside their bag with a blanket over their lap instead
- A large blanket may substitute for a sleeping bag for players with claustrophobia or sensory sensitivities
Stewardship Moment
- Each player uses their own bag where possible; if bags are shared, air them out fully after the game
- Reflection: “Why does it matter that we take care of shared gear?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves getting inside a sleeping bag. For those not comfortable fully inside a bag, sitting beside it with a blanket over your lap is another option.”
- Mid-game check: Before the Guesser returns each round, quickly check that all players are comfortable. Players may signal thumbs-down to pause.
- Re-entry: Any player who steps out of the game may rejoin as Guesser at the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players feeling confined or anxious inside a bag: full-zip is not required; blanket alternative always available
- Guesser feeling pressured to get all answers right: frame guessing as a fun challenge, not a test
- Hygiene: encourage players to use their own bags where possible; air bags after play
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “What Changed?”: players study the group for 30 seconds, one person makes a small change (swap a shoe, move a hair clip), group identifies what changed
- “Mystery Voice”: one player speaks a sentence in a silly voice from behind a door; group guesses who it is
Debrief Questions
- What? “What clues did you use to identify someone?”
- So What? “What does it tell you about how well you know this group?”
- Now What? “How does paying close attention to people help you in other areas of camp life?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Each player retrieves their own bag and rolls or packs it
- 60-second sweep of the floor area for any items left behind
