Name and Purpose
- Balloon Bridge Relay builds trust and coordination as back-to-back pairs pass balloons down a relay course without using a grip.
- Players practise communication, pacing, and gentle handling under a little friendly pressure.
a.k.a.
- Back-to-Back Relay, Linked Relay
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 12-40 players (teams of 6-10) | 15-25 minutes | Large outdoor field or long indoor space; min 20m course
Materials
- 4 large balloons per team (plus spares in case of pops)
- Cones for start and finish lines
- Optional: pinnies or coloured bibs for team identification
Quick-Run Card
- Divide into teams. Each team stands in pairs, back to back with elbows linked, spaced evenly along the course.
- First pair holds two balloons (one in each pair of joined hands).
- On “Go” first pair walks to the second pair and transfers the balloons.
- Second pair carries balloons to the third pair, and so on.
- Team whose last pair crosses the finish line first completes the round.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark a clear start line and finish line with cones
- Pairs space themselves evenly between start and finish before play begins
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause; 2 whistles = stop and gather
- Check the full course for uneven ground, obstacles, or wet patches
How to Play
- Divide players into teams of 6-10. Form pairs within each team.
- Pairs stand back to back with elbows linked. Space pairs evenly along the course from start to finish.
- Give the first pair on each team 2 balloons (one held in each set of joined hands, totalling 4 balloons between two pairs).
- On the “Go” signal, the first pair walks to the next pair and transfers their balloons. No popping. No squeezing.
- Each pair passes the balloons to the next pair until the final pair crosses the finish line.
- Second Circle: if a balloon pops, that pair does 5 side-steps together to collect a replacement balloon from the spare pile, then continues. No team is eliminated for a pop.
- First team to have their final pair cross the finish line wins the round.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Move quickly and precisely with your partner; aim to beat the clock
- S (Support): Call out encouraging instructions to the next pair on your team
- Q (Quiet): Focus on a slow, careful transfer; prioritise no pops over speed
- O (Observer): Manage the spare balloon pile; hand out replacements and track pops; rotate in next round
Inclusion Adaptations
- Pairs who cannot link elbows may hold a short rope or bandana between them instead
- Walking pace required throughout; no running, which levels the playing field across abilities
- Course length can be shortened for younger groups or players with limited mobility
Stewardship Moment
- Collect all balloon fragments at the end; balloons that pop should be gathered immediately as they are a hazard to animals and the environment
- Reflection: “We used four balloons and had to protect them the whole relay. What does it take to carry something carefully?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves linking arms with a partner. For those not comfortable with arm-linking, holding a short rope or bandana between you is another option that works just as well.”
- Mid-game check: After the first round, check in with a thumbs signal. Swap partners if needed.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Step to the sideline by raising a hand. Rejoin as the spare-balloon manager or at the next round rotation.
Risks and Mitigation
- Partners pulling in different directions: remind pairs to decide before starting who will lead the pace
- Tripping when moving back to back: walk-only rule enforced; remind pairs to communicate step direction aloud
- Balloon pops startling players: normalise before play (“If a balloon pops, that’s part of the game. Grab a spare and keep going.”)
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Mirror Walk”: pairs face each other and mirror each other’s walking pace for 30 seconds; builds partner awareness
- “Back Lean”: pairs stand back to back and gently lean into each other; builds trust and body awareness
Debrief Questions
- What? “What made the transfer the trickiest part?”
- So What? “How did you and your partner communicate without being able to see each other?”
- Now What? “Where else do you have to trust someone you can’t fully see or check in with?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all balloon fragments and any unpopped spares
- Collect cones and store
- Check the course area for leftover gear
