Name and Purpose
- Balloon Baseball keeps the fun of baseball while slowing everything down so every player can connect with the ball and succeed.
- Players practise batting, fielding, and base running in a low-pressure, high-laugh format.
a.k.a.
- Float Ball, Balloon Bat
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-20 players (split into two teams of 5-10) | 20-30 minutes | Open outdoor space or large gym; approx 20m x 20m
Materials
- 5-10 balloons (varied colours if possible; have plenty of spares)
- 1 wiffle ball bat or foam bat
- 4 cones or spot markers for bases
- Optional: soft batting tee for players who prefer it
Quick-Run Card
- Set up a base diamond with 4 cones.
- Pitcher tosses the balloon gently to the batter (or places it on a tee).
- Batter hits the balloon and runs the bases.
- Fielders catch or tap the balloon to tag or force outs.
- 3 outs per inning; play 3 innings or to a time limit.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark bases clearly with cones; set distances to suit age and group size (8-15m per baseline works well)
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause play; 2 whistles = stop and gather
- Check the field for holes, debris, and uneven ground before play
- Outfield boundary: set a clear line beyond which a hit balloon scores a home run
How to Play
- Divide into two equal teams. One team bats; the other fields.
- Pitcher stands 4-5m from the batter and gently tosses the balloon. If a batter prefers, use a batting tee.
- Batter hits the balloon with the bat and runs toward first base.
- Fielders catch or tap the balloon down to get outs: tag the runner with the balloon, or reach the base before the runner.
- Three outs end the batting team’s turn. Teams switch.
- Score 1 run for each player who makes it around all 4 bases and back to home.
- Play 3 innings or until time is called. Team with the most runs wins.
- Second Circle: players who are “out” become balloon retrievers in the field; they stay active and re-enter at the next inning.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Bat, run bases, or play outfield aggressively
- S (Support): Play catcher or first-base holder; help coordinate the fielding team
- Q (Quiet): Use the batting tee; take a slower jog between bases
- O (Observer): Track the score; call innings; cheer hits and good fielding; rotate in at the next inning
Inclusion Adaptations
- Batting tee available for all players who want it; no explanation needed
- Fielders may use two hands to trap the balloon against their body rather than a one-hand catch
- Base path can be shortened for players who need it; adjust one or two bases closer without stopping play
Stewardship Moment
- Collect all balloon fragments when balloons pop; store unused balloons for future sessions
- Reflection: “Balloons are fragile. What other things in your life need gentle handling?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This is a batting game. For those not comfortable swinging a bat near others, fielding or base-running are equally fun roles.”
- Mid-game check: After the first inning, check in with a thumbs signal. Adjust bat-to-tee preference as needed.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Raise a hand to step out of the batting order. Return at the next inning or take a fielding role.
Risks and Mitigation
- Bat swing hitting a nearby player: establish a clear batting box and ensure all fielders stand at least 3m away before each swing
- Balloon fragments causing a hazard: collect every popped balloon piece immediately; assign a balloon manager on the fielding team
- Outfielders colliding when chasing the balloon: “Call it!” rule: first player to call “mine” has right of way
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Balloon Keep-Up”: group keeps one balloon in the air as long as possible before splitting into teams
- “Slow-Mo Fielding”: players practise trapping a slowly drifting balloon with two hands before play begins
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was different about hitting a balloon compared to a regular ball?”
- So What? “How did slowing things down change how you played?”
- Now What? “Where else does slowing down actually make things go better?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all balloon fragments and any unpopped spares
- Collect cones and bat; return to storage
- Check field for any leftover gear
