Name and Purpose
- Balloon Pair Relay builds partner trust and spatial awareness through the challenge of carrying a balloon without using hands.
- Players practise communication, pacing, and gentle teamwork in a high-energy relay format.
a.k.a.
- Back-to-Back Balloon, Partner Balloon Race
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-40 players (teams of 8-10, pairs within each team) | 15-20 minutes | Open outdoor field or large gym; min 15m run to turnaround
Materials
- 5 balloons per team (have plenty of spares; balloons may pop)
- 1 cone or hula hoop per team for the turnaround point
- Cones for the start line
- Optional: pinnies for team identification
Quick-Run Card
- Teams line up in pairs at the start line.
- First pair stands back to back with a balloon held between their backs.
- On “Go”, pair walks to the turnaround cone, around it, and back. No hands on the balloon.
- If the balloon drops (not pops), pair stops, picks it up, replaces it, and continues.
- Next pair starts when the first returns. First team to finish sits down to signal completion.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark a clear start line and a turnaround cone or hula hoop per team, approximately 15m apart
- Teams line up side by side so parallel courses do not cross
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause; 2 whistles = stop and gather
- Check the run course for obstacles, uneven ground, or wet patches
How to Play
- Divide players into teams of 8-10. Pair players within each team. If one team is a person short, one pair goes twice, and that is fine.
- Each team’s first pair stands back to back at the start line with a balloon between their backs, no hands.
- On the “Go” signal, the pair walks carefully to the turnaround cone, goes around it, and returns to the start line.
- If the balloon drops: pair stops, picks up the balloon, replaces it between their backs, and continues. No penalty.
- If the balloon pops: pair quickly grabs a spare from the start-line pile, replaces it, and continues.
- When the pair returns, the next pair goes.
- First team to have all pairs complete the run signals completion by sitting down together.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Move as quickly as you can while keeping the balloon in place
- S (Support): Call encouragement to your team; help the next pair position their balloon correctly
- Q (Quiet): Move at a slow, steady pace; prioritise no drops over speed
- O (Observer): Manage the spare balloon pile; hand out replacements; track which pairs have gone; rotate in next round
Inclusion Adaptations
- Pairs who cannot stand back to back may carry the balloon between their shoulders while standing side by side
- If physical pairing is uncomfortable, a player can carry the balloon solo, held between forearm and body
- Course length can be shortened for younger groups or players who need it; use the same distance for all teams in that group
Stewardship Moment
- Collect all balloon fragments immediately after each pop; do not leave pieces on the ground
- Reflection: “We needed extras because things popped. What other situations in life are better when you have a backup plan?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves standing back to back with a partner. For those not comfortable with that, a side-by-side carry or solo carry is another option that works just as well.”
- Mid-game check: After the first round, check in with a thumbs signal. Offer to re-pair players if needed.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Raise a hand to step to the side. Take the spare balloon manager role. Rejoin at the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Partners moving in opposite directions: before starting, pairs agree on who sets the pace and calls “turn” at the cone
- Balloon popping and startling players: normalise this before play; calmly say “Pop? Grab a spare!” and continue
- Teams crossing into each other’s lanes: mark each team’s lane clearly with cones; enforce lane discipline
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Back Lean”: pairs stand back to back and gently lean into each other; builds body contact comfort and trust
- “Synchronised Step”: pairs link arms (or stand back to back) and take 5 steps left, 5 steps right together; builds paired movement
Debrief Questions
- What? “What happened when the balloon dropped? How did your pair respond?”
- So What? “What did you have to do differently to move as a pair instead of as an individual?”
- Now What? “When is it important to match your pace to someone else’s?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all balloon fragments and unpopped spares; dispose of popped pieces responsibly
- Collect cones and hula hoops; store for next use
- Quick check of the course area for leftover gear
