Name and Purpose
- Shooting Stars Basketball gives every player a shooting turn while rewarding accuracy across three skill levels.
- Players practise dribbling, shot selection, and team strategy in a structured, encouraging format.
a.k.a.
- Star Shooter, Zone Shoot
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-30 players (2 teams of 5-15) | 20-30 minutes | Basketball court with two hoops; indoor gym preferred
Materials
- 1-2 basketballs
- Coloured star cutouts or tokens: 10-point (one colour), 20-point (second colour), 30-point (third colour)
- 3 cone markers per hoop to mark shooting zones
- 1 bucket or box per team for collected stars
- Optional: scoreboard or whiteboard
Quick-Run Card
- Mark three shooting spots per hoop with cones (lay-up zone, mid-range, long-range).
- Place all coloured stars in the centre of the court in a shared pile.
- One player per team dribbles to their hoop and picks a shooting spot.
- Made basket: player returns to their line and picks a star matching their shot value.
- Missed basket: player dribbles back and gives the ball to the next teammate. Game continues until stars are gone or time is called.
Setup and Boundaries
- Place cones clearly at the lay-up line, mid-range arc, and long-range zone for each hoop
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause; 2 whistles = stop and gather
- Stars stay in the centre pile until earned; no pre-claiming
- Both teams run simultaneously at their own hoop
How to Play
- Divide into two equal teams. Each team lines up at the centre court facing their assigned hoop.
- On the “Go” signal, one player from each team dribbles to their hoop and selects a shooting zone.
- Player takes one shot from their chosen zone.
- Made basket: player dribbles back, gives the ball to the next teammate, then picks a star matching the point value of their shot zone and places it in the team bucket.
- Missed basket: player dribbles back and hands the ball to the next teammate. No star is collected.
- Game continues with one player at a time per team until all stars are claimed, or until a set time limit is reached.
- Teams count their star-point totals. Highest total wins the round.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Dribble and shoot from your choice of zone; push for the long-range bonus
- S (Support): Call encouragement; help younger or newer players choose their best shot zone before they go
- Q (Quiet): Choose the lay-up zone; move at a steady pace; focus on a clean shot over speed
- O (Observer): Manage the star pile; hand out correct-colour stars after each made basket; track team totals; rotate in next round
Inclusion Adaptations
- Lay-up zone can be moved closer to the basket for players who need it; point value remains the same within that team’s round
- Players may use a two-hand underhand throw instead of a full dribble-and-shoot if needed
- Dribbling down the court can be replaced by walking with the ball for players who need it; focus is on the shot
Stewardship Moment
- Stars and tokens are reusable; collect all pieces and store carefully after play
- Reflection: “You earned your stars through skill and choice. What choices did you make, and would you choose differently next time?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “You get to pick which zone you shoot from. There’s no wrong choice. For those not comfortable dribbling the full length, walking with the ball is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After a few rounds, pause and ask for a thumbs signal. Adjust zone distances or dribbling rules as needed.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Step back from the line by raising a hand. Take the star manager or scorekeeper role. Return to the shooting line at any point.
Risks and Mitigation
- Two players from opposing teams near the same star pile at the same time: stagger turn starts by 10 seconds so players are not at the centre simultaneously
- Basketball hitting another player: remind players to dribble in their team’s lane; no crossing to the other team’s hoop side
- Player frustrated by missed shots: staff narrate positively; remind players that choosing a closer zone is a smart strategy, not a lesser one
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Dribble Parade”: players dribble in a large circle around the court once to loosen up
- “One-and-Done”: each player takes one practice shot from the lay-up zone before teams form; normalises the miss
Debrief Questions
- What? “Which zone did you choose, and why?”
- So What? “What did it feel like to make a basket for your team? What about missing?”
- Now What? “How do you decide when to take a risk and when to play it safe?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all star cutouts/tokens and store by colour in separate bags or containers
- Remove cone markers from the court
- Return basketballs to storage
