Name and Purpose
- Rundown Rush captures the electric tension of being caught between two bases and turning it into a whole-group game.
- Players build spatial awareness, timing, decision-making, and sprinting confidence.
a.k.a.
- Pickle, Hotbox, Baserunner
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Large outdoor open space, min. 15m run lane, approx. 5m wide
Materials
- 1 soft foam ball or tennis ball
- 2 base markers (cones, poly spots, or flat markers placed at each end of the run lane)
- 4 additional cones to mark the lane boundaries (optional but recommended for larger groups)
Quick-Run Card
- Mark two bases 10-12m apart with a clear lane between them.
- Two Catchers stand at each base; one starts with the ball.
- All Runners start at one base.
- Catchers toss the ball back and forth while Runners try to cross to the other base without being tagged.
- Runners call out their crossing count each time they make it. Rotate Catcher roles after each round.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark a lane 10-12m long and approx. 5m wide using cones.
- Two bases (poly spots or flat cones) at each end.
- Signal: 1 short whistle = pause; 2 short whistles = stop and gather.
- Check ground for holes, uneven patches, or wet spots.
- Catchers must tag gently, using one hand only.
How to Play
- Two Catchers take their positions at each base. One holds the ball to start.
- All Runners line up at one base.
- On the start signal, Catchers begin passing the ball back and forth. Runners try to dash to the other base without being tagged.
- Runners call out their crossing number each time they safely reach a base (“One!” “Two!” and so on).
- A tagged Runner is not out. They pause, give the ball to the nearest Catcher, and immediately re-enter from the nearest base.
- The round runs for 2-3 minutes. After each round, two new volunteers take over as Catchers.
- At the end of all rounds, celebrate the highest crossing counts and any impressive moments.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Run as a fully committed Catcher or Runner, sprint across at full speed.
- S (Support): Count crossings aloud for your group, encourage Runners with calls.
- Q (Quiet): Time your runs carefully, cross at a jog or walk-pace from the safe base.
- O (Observer): Watch from beside the lane, count crossings for the group, join as a Catcher or Runner next round.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Runners who cannot sprint can cross at a walk; the tag rule still applies, making it a strategic game of timing.
- Catchers who cannot throw can roll the ball between bases; adjust lane length to match.
- Shorten the run lane to 6-8m for younger or less mobile players.
Stewardship Moment
- After play, collect all markers and do a 60-second ground sweep for any dropped items.
- Reflection: “What was your decision-making process when you were about to run? What signals helped you?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves running and gentle tagging. For those not comfortable with being tagged, the Observer or score-counting role is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After the first round, pause. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. Is the pace and distance working?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Raise a hand to step to the sideline. Rejoin as a Catcher at the next round start.
Risks and Mitigation
- Collisions between Runners: remind players to spread out their crossing attempts; they do not all need to go at once.
- Hard tagging: specify “one hand, gentle touch” and pause play if tagging escalates.
- Runners becoming frustrated at repeated tags: re-frame as a count-your-crossings game where every successful crossing is a win.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Shuttle Dash”: run from one cone to another and back, twice, before the game starts.
- “Freeze Run”: players jog across the lane; on a whistle they freeze in place and hold for 3 seconds.
Debrief Questions
- What? “How did you decide when to run?”
- So What? “What happened when you and another Runner tried to cross at the same time?”
- Now What? “What does it feel like to make a quick decision under pressure? Where else do you do that?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all bases and cones.
- Return ball to equipment storage.
- 60-second ground sweep.
