Name & Purpose Hip Check Tag swaps hand-tagging for a gentle hip-to-hip side bump. It slows down the game, builds body awareness, and creates real laughs. Players must get close enough for a hip bump β which makes the chase funnier and more deliberate.
a.k.a. Bumper Cars Tag, Side Bump Tag, Hip Tag
Age Band / Group Size / Time / Space Ages 8β16 | 8β30 players | 10β15 min | Medium outdoor field or gym (soft surface preferred)
Materials
- 4β8 boundary cones
- Optional: 1β2 coloured pinnies for Tagger(s)
Quick-Run Card Choose 1 Tagger (2 for groups of 20+). The Tagger chases and makes a tag using only a light side-bump with their hip. No hands, no pushing, no knocking anyone over. Tagged player becomes the new Tagger. Old Tagger joins the group as a runner. Play for 10β15 minutes.
Setup & Boundaries Mark a medium playing area. Larger groups need more space. Demonstrate the hip-bump before play β model light, side-on contact at hip height. Let players practise on a willing partner. If the bump causes anyone to stumble, it is too hard. Start play only after the demo.
How to Play
- Tagger starts in the middle. Call “Go!”
- Tagger chases runners and attempts a gentle side hip-bump.
- Contact must be side-to-side at hip level β not a shoulder check, not a shove.
- Tagger calls out “Bumped!” so the tagged player hears it clearly.
- Tagged player becomes the new Tagger. Original Tagger runs free.
- Runners stay inside the boundary.
- Counsellor watches for force level β call “Too hard!” if bumps escalate.
I-OPt Roles All three styles active simultaneously:
- Blocker (Performer): Plays as Tagger, approaches at angles, times the hip bump.
- Dodger (Relater): Uses lateral movement, turns their hip away from the Tagger, reads approaching angles.
- Analyst (Searcher): Watches the Tagger’s pattern, moves to open space before being targeted, helps teammates by calling warnings.
Inclusion Supports
- Players who prefer lighter contact can signal with a raised hand β Tagger gives a very gentle, almost-touch bump to them.
- Players who prefer no contact can wear a flag-football belt; Tagger pulls the flag instead of hip-bumping.
- Allow any movement style: walking, shuffling, wheelchair rolling.
- Reduce boundary size for players who need a slower-paced version.
Stewardship Collect cones together. 30-second reflection: “In this game you had to control your strength. Where else in camp life does controlling your strength matter?”
Consent Pre-brief: “This game uses light hip contact β like bumper cars, side-to-side, never a push. If you prefer zero body contact, use a flag belt and I’ll set one up for you right now. No explanation needed.” Mid-game check-in: After the first two tags, counsellor calls a 5-second pause β “Force level check β keeping it gentle? Good.” Opt-out/re-entry: Any player steps to the sideline and crosses their arms. They re-enter anytime by uncrossing arms and stepping in.
Risks & Mitigation
| Risk | Likelihood | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|
| Bump too forceful, player stumbles | Medium | Demo + ongoing monitoring; stop play to correct immediately |
| Player falls on hard surface | Medium | Prefer soft grass or gym mat; remind players to stay balanced |
| Competitive escalation of force | Medium | Tagger earns no benefit from harder bumps β remind and enforce |
| Player uncomfortable with hip contact | Medium | Flag-belt alternative ready before play begins |
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Bumper Cars Walk”: everyone walks the boundary using gentle hip-to-hip side contacts with people they pass β normalises the movement.
- “Balance Check”: stand on one foot for 10 seconds β builds body stability before contact play.
Debrief What? “What made the hip bump harder to land than a regular hand tag?” So what? “What did you have to control β speed, angle, strength β to make it work?” Now what? “Controlled strength is a skill. Name a place in your life where you need to dial strength up or down.”
Cleanup & Reset Collect cones and pinnies. Return to gear bag. Reset under 2 minutes.
Notes This game works best with groups who already trust each other and are comfortable with casual contact. Run the full demo and consent pre-brief every time β do not skip it even with returning groups. Flag belts as an alternative are non-negotiable for anyone who requests one.
